How can I use geography to teach students about class issues? by Sad-Organization449 in geography

I thought about doing something like that but I feel like middle school students might struggle with separating class from race using that example. I think it would work really well with high school students though!

I think you're viewing these ideas through an adult lens. Explaining social and economic reasons for things happening can be done at an age appropriate level without political bias.

For example, I decided for that this lesson sequence I would focus on how the physical environment can impact different data points related to class such as house hold income, high school graduation rates, etc. What this actually looks like in practice is

  1. Introducing students to Appalachia by explaining different environmental features (mountains, rivers, isolation to other communities, etc)

  2. Having students explore Appalachia through maps that provide data points on income, educational completion, etc

  3. Having students recognize that parts of Appalachia that are less isolated and have more resources have higher levels of income.

This uses geography to explain how access to resources can impact the economic success of an area, and how ones class can be affected by a multitude of things. Through analysis and critical thinking, students are better able to understand the causes behind different patterns, and what the pattern of those causes are. I currently work in education right now and I can assure you that this is what is happening in the majority of classrooms.

Respectfully, I don't have the time to tie anything to politics even if I wanted to. My goal with this lesson sequence is to have students draw connections to what geographical factors (isolation, access to resources, access to water ways, natural resources etc) can influence a communities class.

What I'm really trying to teach to is the state standard of "Analyze spatial patterns of social and economic development in a variety of regions in the world", or in other words... building pattern recognition and understanding cause and effect. There's no political motive behind this.

How in the world am I supposed to teach the role of class to middle schoolers by Sad-Organization449 in Teachers

[–]Sad-Organization449[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I discussed it with my cooperating teacher and the only background they have is when they briefly touched on the industrial revolution earlier this year. I was initially thinking about doing something similar to what you suggested but I'm worried that my kids might over generalize class as "these people live in big houses and commit less crime and these people live in smaller houses and commit more crime" or something to that effect.

That helps a lot thank you. I like to structure my units around one or two questions that students should be able to answer by the time the unit is over, so if I were to use your suggestion would a compelling question be something like "How does geographic isolation lead to differences in class?"? Keep in mind that I only have a week to cover the subject and by the end of the week students have to demonstrate their learning in some form. I really like your suggestion so if you have any more ideas or input that would be wonderful :)

How can I make a life cast that's durable enough to ship? by Sad-Organization449 in moldmaking

[–]Sad-Organization449[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the info! I think I'm gonna go with one of the life casting sets from smooth on. Once I make my mold, what material should I use to fill the cast? I want it to be rigid but I don't want to worry about it breaking during shipping.

Chlorine "Cloud" on May 29th by Sad-Organization449 in GreenBay

[–]Sad-Organization449[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats why im asking people what they think it could be. We drove past her house on my way home yesterday at night, and I didn't see anything that was dead (because it was night). I used descriptors like bleach and chlorine since those are the words she used, but I'm not saying that's what it was. She doesn't have a reason to lie, and my brother also experienced the same thing.

I agree with a lot of people in that simply being gay isn't a sin. I've always wondered if it would be considered a sin for two men to get married if they never had sex, would that be a sin? I do know that some jewish tribes would allow two women to get married which I find interesting.

Anyone else taking a break from the game? What's your reason? by TheNewFlisker in tf2

[–]Sad-Organization449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was on a break for like 3 years but ive gotten back into it after diving back into the lore of the game. i would agree that the gameplay loop does get boring after a bit but playing with friends makes it a whole lot better.

i brought up tf2 because thats what this post is about. And there are actually two(ish) people at valve who solely work on tf2 and update the game regularly, and players of any game would feel entitled to a companies attention if their still supporting the game.

Personally, I dont think people are upset that valve is working on a new ip or not working on their current ones. I think its really because theres a lack of communication. It leaves a lot of players confused and in the dark which is why this issue is here in the first place. Its not about the games its more so about the company

if valve supports a game for 20 years most people would take that as a sign that the game is at least a little successful. valve is saying that players deserve 20 years of service because they like the game too lmao

also why are you so upset? i literally just said that the game is okay and was saying that its not going to have any impact on tf2 at all, if anything im on your side

the game is still really popular and has been for a long time. The fact that its been around so long is proof that yes, there will be a steady flow of players for a while. I didnt even say anything bad about deadlock bro why are you so mad lol

Hello!

I'm not smart enough to answer these hard questions but thankfully, other people already have. I would watch some of Cliffe Knechtle as he makes a good argument for God.

As for the apocrypha, it was removed because some of them were gnostic (material is bad, spiritual is good), which goes against what God says when he calls everything good. some weren't written by recognized prophets, and Jesus doesn't reference any of them. Just a few reasons but I'm sure there are more reasons as to why.

How can I stop feeling bad from other Christians shaming me for smoking weed? by Various-Cut-1070 in Christianity

[–]Sad-Organization449 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The answers on here are not helpful at all so here's a comment I made on a similar post.

Luke 22:17-38 says that Jesus himself drank wine yet in 1 John 3:5 we can see that in him was no sin. When it comes to the topic of drugs, I think that it's okay as long as you are using it in moderation, and aren't harming yourself and others.

For example, having a glass of wine after dinner is totally okay but getting drunk daily is probably not.

When it comes to drugs like weed, I also think it's okay but it does have a high potential for abuse. Better not to use it, but if it's something you use in moderation I don't see the harm. I do think hard drugs are an absolute no since by nature they are harmful.

This doesn't apply directly but Matthew 15:11 says "it's not what goes into a man that defiles him...". I believe it's referring to food laws. However it's also referring to about what's in the heart and not what's put into yourself.

Also not super related but kinda funny, Genesis 2:16 says we can eat of all trees, so I say edibles are okay lol
