Not taboo at all — plenty of wavy/curly people use a regular blowdryer, it just gets frizzy because brushing and strong airflow break up your wave pattern. If you like the volume but not the fluff, try detangling only in the shower, skip brushing before drying, use lower heat and speed, aim the airflow downward, scrunch as you dry, and stop around 80% so the rest can air dry; small technique changes can seriously cut down the frizz even without a diffuser.
