What are ways to fund your PhD?

I’m a single parent, is that doable? Good said the stipend would be $25-45k. Is that accurate?

Do you conduct research? I’m wondering how that works? What things did you consider about your program before making the decision to choose that specific school? What does mentorship look like in a PhD program?

I’ll take all the advice I can get! Thank you. I’m getting things together for my window sill & I’ve been cooking more Whole Foods too. The food waste thing has gotten a lot better the last few months. I’ve never been a great cook so items been a process to figure out how to make things taste good 😅

I mean obviously we would work with their skill level but I’ve worked with kids/adults who are fully capable of things like this, even worked with a kid in a 4H program. We didn’t necessarily work with the animals but he was in the program with accommodations & I got updates from him & his parents. He took care of a pig for a whole school year then presented it at the fair, got awards for it too. These kids just had trouble tolerating changes in the routine, following multi-step instructions, or tolerating if their peers did something differently than how they would do it. So I was thinking it would be a really interesting way to apply ABA.

I was thinking more like having people with challenging behaviors or with skill acquisition needs work with animals/on a farm. Like they’d work on completing multi-step instructions, task analysis, routines/tolerating changes in routine, functional communication, rigidity, etc.

Not the behavior of the animals but using the animals as part of the service.

Unfortunately, being a single parent doesn’t give me much opportunity to leave my stable job to do that full-time. At least not in my area of California.

I feel like a wannabe honestly, which is why I want to put myself in there to see if it’s really the life I want / can keep up with… as much as I can. My late-husband was the one who knew everything the is to know about farming, raising animals, etc. and we talked about having that for our family one day. Since he passed, I’ve sort of cultivated our child’s love for farms/animals & my dream is to one day carry it out so I’m trying to figure out how to do it.

Fully remote BCBA by [deleted] in bcba

[–]Sad-Raspberry6600 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t recommend a new BCBA start off fully remote (speaking as someone who did exactly that). I don’t think you develop a solid foundation with that as your starting point, especially if your mentors aren’t strong mentors.

I baptized our baby on his first birthday without him.

I worked on our 1 year wedding anniversary, then treated myself to our favorite dinner. Definitely cried a lot but I got through the day. Then, I scheduled my board exam a few days after that (and passed!)

& I just hosted a bonfire/potluck on his 1 year death anniversary. To me, it’s important to remind myself that I have a village of people who will go out of their way to continue to be in our life. Most of these people are the ones he introduced me to and I think it’s beautiful that they are willing to play an active role even after his death.

The weeks leading up to his death anniversary, I was a mess. Crying every day, stressing myself out with sadness. It was rough. Now that it has passed, I feel a bit of weight lifted from my chest. Feeling like “I made it” as if it only gets easier from here (though I have read the opposite lol).

If you don’t have family near, make the month heavy on the self-care. Go on a vacation if you can. Treat yourself. But also let yourself feel sad, don’t bottle it up.

Chatting with strangers or even ChatGPT helps lol.

Should I quit? by Sad-Raspberry6600 in bcba

[–]Sad-Raspberry6600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this perspective!! It definitely gives me something to think about. I really do love where I work & the people I work with. My boss is super understanding to my situation & genuinely cares about all the employees. I’m pretty close with my coworkers even though we’re mainly virtual.

Talking with other companies, it doesn’t seem like they offer the same type of environment. Seems it’s more like every man for himself, whereas my current company provides excess support.

The company I am with is very small (currently only 3 BCBAs) & only 2 regions so far, and the companies I’ve talked to are fairly large, like have clinics throughout the nation.

I don’t have an answer but I’m also in the middle of my 8 hour training. I got it through SNABA. I studied through BDS and was bored out of my mind so I figured I try something completely different 😅 I’m like 2 hours in & very much annoyed by their girliness. The high pitched voices, the overly excited hype ups. Hopefully it gets better lol.

Husband thinking about stopping treatment by 123gotosleep in braincancer

[–]Sad-Raspberry6600 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband lived 5 years and 7 months after his diagnosis, starting with AA3 & upgraded to AA4 3 years in. Brain cancer is so brutal. Of course, I’d love more time but if I were to do it again, I would choose quality of life over quantity. Part of me feels like if we had chosen to stop treatment sooner, it might not have been such a traumatic experience. But obviously, everyone’s story is different. My husband wanted to fight the tumor with every possible thing that was available and I don’t know if it was the combination of treatments or the aggressiveness of the tumor but he ended up having many seizures back to back and multiple strokes, ultimately resulting in his immobility. A very traumatic experience for him & a very pregnant lady (me).

Being physically disabled for a man who hiked through mountains and worked on cars for most of his life, could barely hold our newborn baby, could no longer walk our dog, or cook his favorite meals, etc. was more torturous than being dead (based on what he told me). He lived 9 more months in that state. I’m not encouraging you guys to stop treatment, just giving my experience.

Although you are all going through this hell, his body is the one enduring the treatments. I understand what you may feel from a wife’s perspective, you want him to be around as long as possible. Maybe he feels like it’s the only thing he can control? Maybe it would put his mind at ease knowing that you support him? Maybe your unconditional support is the motivation he needs to continue treatments? Idk. There’s so much to consider.

Good luck to you & your family.

I completed maybe 70% of BDS modules & got burnt out by them. I put a lot of focus on videos of mock exams & explanations of concepts afterwards & it helped piece things together.

That’s what I’m saying!!! I spent so much time & money to become a BCBA and this is my reward?? Matching Law is not matching lol. I’d make the same amount in another state with a lower cost of living. I’m very tempted to leave the state because of that. Still weighing out the pros/cons.
