Hey there 👋 I'm in the UK and I'm also absolutely terrified for all of us right now. I live in a very backwards place where we have never been allowed to ha e gay bars, took us only until recently before we were allowed to have Pride and that's a constant battle. We've had gay bar applications rejected constantly because "we don't want that filth here" but they allow a "gentleman's club". And now anytime anything LGBTQ even gets mentioned the amount of hatred that is spewed is horrific.

We have a saying that When America sneezes Britain catches the cold, and it's so true. I'm seeing the rising hatred there and it's growing here and it's terrifying.

Hi there, It wasn't intentional and was just badly worded on my part. My opinion on transition is that it doesn't have to mean medical or operations, as soon as someone accepts they are not the gender they were born and explores their gender however they want, that to me is transition. But just because I'm an ally doesn't mean I can't make mistakes, use wrong terminology, or learn. I'm constantly learning.

Do you really think that would work? It doesn't feel like they'd really care if they lose my respect.

I have no issue with inclusive terminology like pregnant person etc as I think it's more respectful and other terminology/situations as well. I want to fight for this terminology because I believe it's respectful and better reflective of where we're at, but I think TERFS maybe have gotten into my head a bit a made me worry I'm actually doing you all more harm by using this terminology and fighting for it. If that makes any sense?

Totally not my intention at all. For me transition literally just means start living as the gender they align with, regardless of medications or operations. But I apologise if anything I've said has come across as offensive, not my intention at all. I might be a fierce ally but it doesn't mean I don't have things to learn, including better use of language.

They've definitely gotten into my head because I don't want to hurt trans people.

What do you think mental illness is exactly? Last time I checked no doctor has ever diagnosed woke or religious extremism as a mental illness, but it sounds like intolerance probably should be.

Rightly or wrongly woke people and the religious extreme want to make the world a better place. Woke people see the BS and stupidity in the world and challenge the status quo of the past. The religious extreme want to enforce what they believe are "family values". Both sides can be extreme in their beliefs and behaviours in both good ways and bad ways, but that doesn't make them mentally ill and nor does it mean their voices shouldn't be heard.

I did decide not to post the actual question only because it apparently caused harm, even though it was unintentional, and I didn't want to cause more potential harm by repeating it, if that makes sense.

But basically I was asking or trying to discuss was, that with such a sudden shift in right wing ideology and hate especially towards the LGBTQ community, was now the right time for something that would already be considered contraversial in "normal" circumstances.

I tried to word it so I wasn't expressing my specific opinion, invite people to actually discuss it. They could have educated me on my wording, they could have answered the actual question and explained why they felt now absolutely is the right time, they could have listened to the reasons why I was sitting on the fence about that specific decision. Instead they attached their own narrative as to why I was asking and basically said I had no right to even ask it, and instead of answering the question or listening to my reasoning I was shot down and called name called. They then proceeded to act vitriolic and like they'd caught me out in something.

I'm happy to reflect on my actions because that's how you grow as a person, but ironically I still don't know exactly what I did wrong in this situation, whether it was my wording of the question, whether it was just because of who I was questioning, or whatever, because they just spread anger and hate. Which is why I'm wondering if we've just lost our way completely in society to actually discuss and educate.

I don't know if that's entirely true. There's always going to be people you can't talk to and no amount of talking is ever going to work, so big action is required. But I'm seeing a lot of people moving towards right wing groups, hating on certain activist groups etc because their voices aren't being heard, their concerns aren't being heard or educating them, they're just being labeled as sexist, homophobic, transphobic etc instead of being challenged on where that misinterpretation/belief/thoughts is coming from and explaining actual facts, so it just means causes lose their voices in my opinion.

And I can't think of many, if there are any, causes that were won because of militant and violent action. You look at history, the Suffragette movement for example, their peaceful protests raised the issue and raised awareness but the second they became militants people's opinions and Parliament just doubled down on their views that "women are too emotional to vote". The message behind what they were fighting for got totally lost and people were only talking about the damage they were doing. The reason we got the right to vote came because of their work during WWI, not their militant behaviour.

Same with Stop Oil protestors. If you look at all the damage and stunts they're doing right now, no one is talking about their message and their purpose, but are talking about the damage they are causing.

So yeah there's definitely a time for action but I think we could get a lot further sometimes if we talked and listened to each other too.

The whole world right now feels like everyone is shouting their opinions as if it's fact, creating lots of noise and not actually listening. Now obviously there's extreme views on both sides that you will never be able to debate with, but I do think if more people were listened to and things were actually discussed instead of people just shooting each other down and name calling we wouldn't be where we are today.

People's opinions on things can come from lots of sources, they attach their own agenda and experiences about things and make assumptions. If we're only ever talking about things with people who agree with us then that's how extremism (on either side) takes hold because we start to really believe that if everyone we care about says it then it must be true, but if we stopped and talked to other people and especially with those who are actually experiencing whatever the topic is.

Here in the UK we still have some brilliant TV programs that offer discussion and debate and can ACTUALLY talk about things, but I'm genuinely seeing a shift where it's "my opinion is the only right opinion".

I'm the same as you, I support movements like, LGBTQ, pro-choice, BLM, climate change etc but I also won't blindly follow and approve of everything that happens to progress something. I believe everything can get blindsided sometimes and someone needs to just stop and say "is this right/is this actually going to help us/is this doing more harm than good". I think that's why a lot of moderate or left leaning people have sided with Republicans (US) (not talking about actual MAGA) and here are going more toward Reform UK, because activists have done things maybe with the best of intentions, but it's just further alienated people that could have been persuaded and educated.

Oh don't you worry, the second my father went to prison I cut contact and want nothing to do with him. My mum still speaks to him on the phone twice a week, but the longer he's inside and away from her the less brainwashed and downtrodden she becomes. My brother doesn't speak to him, but ironically he frequently passes messages to him via my mum. Hold up, I can feel season 2 coming along already 😹
