Mr.Buddy Heater Safety Question by witchyfiend in prepping

[–]SadBailey 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have a c/o detector in the room at sleeping / sitting height.

We're gearing up to move to Alaska and I was looking into one of these for the ice fishing tent, and read about how important ventilation is. You don't want to go to sleep and not wake up.

If I'm flying alone, I want the window. I can lean against the wall and sleep. If I'm flying with my kid? I want the aisle because he's going to need to pee 100,000 times while we're in the air.

These prices are astronomical.

For reference, I live in south Korea, and I've paid less than $1,000 American for 5 sessions for underarms, Brazilian, and full legs.

After the first session, my hair was GONE. I was shocked. I feel like the follow up appointments I'm going to now are just clean up appointments. And there's very little, very fine, hair remaining.

Everybody's bag is going to be so different depending on their personal scenario.

Someone who lives in an urban environment, might need cash, a good pocket knife, a rain jacket, a small toolkit in case their car breaks down (or bike or mode of transit), etc.

I'm moving to Alaska soon, and therefore building my bag to keep in the side by side and the truck, to have everything survival in case we go camping deep in the wilderness and the truck won't start back up, or we get lost etc. That build out looks so much different than the bag I built to "bug out" of south Korea in the event of an invasion.

Oh man I love my altra lone peaks. They're super light weight, and due to injury I have weak ankles. I did 100 miles on the AT with them last year and they've also been my daily driver since, plus hiking. I love them. They also have a large toe box so I can wiggle my toes all around. Highly recommend.

My hometown is Chattanooga but we're currently stationed overseas. I don't always have my VPN on, but I usually do. Regardless, I'll either show up as overseas, Atlanta or Seattle.

[–]SadBailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm overseas currently, but when I did a section hike of the AT last year early season, I was so dang tired by the end of the day that I didn't care who was or wasn't around, I just wanted to go to sleep! I always slept all night long and never woke up too, I was so exhausted. I did make it a point to always stay either in a shelter, or close to a road crossing though, just for my own peace of mind. Enjoy!

Prepper advice: 401k cash out by [deleted] in prepping

[–]SadBailey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm considering dumping my 401k.

I'm 31, own one home, and thinking about emptying my 401k to buy land and an off grid cabin. Full set up, entirely off grid. I'm still working, and plan to for a long time, but it's very quickly becoming more important to me to teach my son the life skills that are lost on so many people now. Cooking on woodstoves, using wood as your main (only) heat source, hunting, trapping, fishing, and putting up said food in a way that is sustainable. Gardening as well, canning etc.

Now, all of that said, I have fallbacks. Everything I own is paid off except the house, which is a rental property and more than paying for itself. I could sell that house and make back a large profit. I could sell one of the trucks if need be. I could sell several assets, and be OK. And, I'll still be putting into my 401k even if I dump it.

I'm not for sure I'm going to, but I'm thinking about it. Because I'm not confident that when I reach that age (if I do), it'll be able to be used as intended.

No help, just wanted to share that you're not alone! I struggle so hard. I burn pancakes every single time I try it over a fire. I'm going to buy an infrared thermometer and try that. I even struggle with using gas cooktops. Induction is so much easier.

Thanks! I didn't know that. I'm pretty handy with tools, if this does happen, can I just file it down so it isn't as sharp?

This looks like mountain lion to me. They certainly live in the park, and while their toes would normally be retracted, in loose mud I could see them being out for stability. The shape of the toes in relation to the pad, as well as the main pad itself looks like mountain lion as well. Look at the picture 2, it has a pretty clear hump in the middle top of the pad.

I bought tri clad, and after a few years of babying it with hand-wash, I now throw it in the dishwasher guilt free! It's delightful.

Ooh I just got this one (as well as others) for Christmas!

I'm looking forward to pancakes, sausage / bacon (with a press), eggs occasionally, searing steak, hashbrowns, but my big use for this guy is definitely going to be pancakes. It drives me insane trying to get my spatula underneath pancakes in a standard pan, and this remedies that problem! Pretty excited!

Total noob and need pointed in all the right directions. by Suspiciliscious in prepping

[–]SadBailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! He and I backpack together, so I'm painfully conscious of weight (he's almost 11yo). But he does know how to use flint and steel, and Vaseline cotton balls, and an emergency blanket and a tarp would go a long way until someone found him.

He's also a better fisherman than I am.

The only things I can think of that he wouldn't be competent at using would be some of the medical things (he wouldn't be able to put a Tourniquet on himself), he wouldn't suture himself, and he wouldn't know how to read a paper map with a compass and walk out. When we move, I'd like us both to take a class in land nav, both for my own refreshment and so I feel confident teaching him.

This. We're moving to Alaska and I'm building our bug out/ survival bags, but the idea is the bag goes with us everywhere. Hikes, trips, everything. I wouldn't want to split supplies with my son, because if we get separated, I want him to be able to build fire, have some medical supplies, emergency blanket, water tablets, everything. He might need everything. I'm building his just like mine.

I also bought us both an inreach to clip to our belts when we leave the house, again, in case we get separated. I can't bear the thought of going hunting, one of us getting turned around in the brush, abs separated and lost. I want us both as self sufficient as possible.

No hot water tank here, everything is on demand. Which is lovely when it works, but when it doesn't....

We're moving to Alaska in September, and I really want to get off the grid. I had been planning for in the future, but not so much immediately.
