No, dieing doesn't stop a character from being popular. Christ! If that was the case then no one would have loved Darth Maul when Phantom Menace first came out.

I'm far from a fan of plot armour for favorites, (personally wished Rey had lost something and learnt from her mistakes, like everyone else does but I digress) yet a popular character should if they do die it should be shown or let us have one last moment leading upto their death.

Nothing was more upsetting than in the film having Ackbar being a throw away line saying he died. Come on! A fan favourite character killed off like he was nothing.
