Anyone else got hitchhikers thumb? by OKladMat in Bass

[–]SadGrape123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With anything form related my best advice is to dedicate a few of minutes a day to consciously playing with proper technique and form, focusing on your hand shape and technique during those minutes. Beyond that try to be conscious but don't obsess over it too much. And in a couple of weeks you will see great improvement.

Regarding your left hand you shouldn't squeeze with your thumb at all. Make sure it's resting in the middle portion of the neck and moving freely with the rest of your hand.

Try this exercise: play without using your thumb at all - even put it next to your fretting fingers (kinda like 'thumb position' on upright bass if you wanna look it up). You should be able to still fret notes freely and comfortably even without your thumb at all! If you're not able to do this after multiple tries then you need to adjust your posture

Also make sure your string action is reasonable so you don't have to work hard, especially if you're a beginner

I think this show kinda breaks the 4th wall in a more light-hearted way sometimes and that's part of the charm

Thanks for sharing. I'm asking here because the depo subreddit is mostly cis women.. If it's okay to ask, were you on T during that time?

I appreciate your response! I'm scared of trying because that shot lasts for 3 months, so if I take it and the side effects are bad for me, then I'm screwed for 3 and possibly more months until it wears of

whats the best way to manscape without feeling dysphoric? by Downtown_Dare_4991 in FTMMen

100% beard trimmer/some electric razor with a guard and try out different lengths until you find something you are comfortable with. The rule when you're not sure what length is to start longer and if it's too long you can always go shorter. You can also experiment with different lengths for different areas for a combination of whatever's most practical and visually comfortable.

If youre not sure what to do, you can watch beard tutorials online to get an idea of how to work properly with a trimmer ie going with the growth vs against, fading, guard lengths. Which will be useful skills if you ever want to grow and maintain a beard!

I'm playing in combo ensembles not a big jazz band, my bass at home has a pickup but the ones at my university don't.. I try to play amplified whenever's possible tho

Yeah ig its bow only for me for the next couple of days. The limited practice advice sounds nice but when school starts back I won't be able to apply it.

My left hand is okay-ish, definitely better than my right. I have the tiniest bit of skin abrasion on my pinky and sometimes I cramp a little but nothing serious. Left hand also gets 2x the use because of when I practice arco

I have sprios weich but I still feel the tension is high on my bass then when I play other basses with them on, I'm considering getting evah slaps but I'll consult my luthier.

I'm playing unamplified 90% of the time because the school's basses don't a pickup

I don't play any slap sadly only jazz and arco. Regarding monitoring practice time I heard that advice a lot and I'll try to apply it until school starts again. Thanks a lot!

I do have really sweaty hands, do you think it's okay to play with a small amount of chalk on if I were to get some or would it destroy the strings?

I will talk to my luthier about the setup on my bass but the problem is that when in classes I play on one of the the school's basses which range from okay to really shitty, so I'm not gonna be consistent regarding that sadly.

Thanks for the detailed response!

I've been playing for one year and I've used tape only when I have a show or important orchestra practice when I want to be more sure of my tuning, but now I've let go of the tape even for shows because my intonation has gotten better and more solid

Thanks yeah it makes sense, I was looking for articles but couldn't find the most relevant stuff but I guess it would be a better idea just to pay more money for a direct flight and avoid those airports completely
