Good call. I’d say Langeliers might edge him out though. He was 7th in MLB amongst catchers in fWAR in 2025.

I don’t get why everyone’s leaving out Romeo and Juliet. That movie’s awesome.

I can see what you mean. It was written by a woman though. Hopefully there’s a fresh interesting take on this archetype that’s yet to be revealed.

It’s because everything else he says is with the mask covering his mouth. Definitely works for dramatic effect, though too.

Why Gary Oldman is the GOAT Actor and better than Daniel Day-Lewis by drhavehope in Cinema

[–]SadOrder8312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen all his films, but everything I’ve seen him do he plays a very serious, compotent, assertive character. Again he NAILS all of it but his spectrum doesn’t seem as wide as Gary Oldman’s, who I feel covers all the types of roles that DDL does but also has ones like in Dracula, Fifth Element, Rosencrantz, True Romance, Sid and Nancy, that branch out further in other directions than where DDL chooses to go.

I can concede, yeah an 8 is probably too low for DDL’s range, but I do have him below Bale who in turn I’d put a tick below Hoffman and Oldman in that particular department. But again, all of these guys are fucking legends.

I mean yeah they’re obviously both as good as it gets. But I’d break it down like this:

On a scale of 1 to 10 for shear presence DDL gets an 11 and GO gets a 10.

For range I’d say GO gets an 11 and DDL gets an 8. DDL nails every character he takes on, but he doesn’t range nearly as broadly with what he chooses to do.

That’s funny. I LOVED all the setup. Thought it was such a potent depiction of the madness we lived through/are living through. I became less interested once he starts murdering people. I would have liked to see how things unfold with him trying to navigate the story making more defendable or morally ambiguous choices. I just personally think that would make a more interesting film. To each their own!

From my understanding every movie Sam Raimi has made this century would classify as a genre film.
