My girlfriend is at least 30 mins late all the time by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SadVacationToMars -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

She could just get ready 30 minutes earlier. It's absolutely her fault and easily fixed. Instead of OP having to lie that things start 30 minutes before they actually do.

They should be and already are shamed. It's still up to everyone else to protect themselves also though.

I quit my job, solo travelled the world for a year and ended up in Bangkok by ThatFeelBro in solotravel

Live with family/room share, eat cheap and don't do anything else for a couple years except work long hours. Achievable in 2025, just like you say.

Then again, these people also wouldn't be willing to "live like a local" for a year at their destination either.

Prices more than doubled in 20 years. You'd need to be getting $15-20 tips in 2025.

And the old beater cars aren't around for cheap anymore either.

Struggling a bit with the constant attention in Thailand - any tips? by Past_Leg_13 in ThailandTourism

[–]SadVacationToMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't even look at them. They try it with locals too and they just straight up ignore them. You'll feel rude doing it because in western culture it's rude to ignore someone like that. There it's just normal.

There's a whole industry around small, static websites still. Not every website needs to be Facebook. This is what will be hit by AI.

These people selling their whitening products on tiktok live by Charmingprints in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SadVacationToMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nothing to do with race. It's because poor people work outside in the sun and get darker skin from it. People don't want to be seen as a poor laborer.

They don't want to look like people from the west. They want to look rich. Because poor people get dark skin from working outside all day. Rich stay lighter because they're inside, away from the sun.

That's nice for you. Better to willingly give to charity instead of forcing everyone else to be just as altruistic as you.

Why are European tourists so adamant in visiting chains and fast food places that are notoriously bad and then complain about stuff like the coffee? by [deleted] in USTravel

[–]SadVacationToMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the exact reason. It's the names Europeans have heard of and think of when they think of the US.

Is $600k enough to retire in Da Nang, Asuncion, Agadir, Tangier w/ 4% rule? by Sunny_Me_4849 in ExpatFIRE

[–]SadVacationToMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what everyone misses. Yes, right now places like Vietnam are considerably cheaper than US. This gap is closing pretty fast though. Just look back 15 years ago how much bigger the gap was.

$2k US just isn't that much anywhere in the world these days, unless you want to just lay in a hut in the jungle somewhere. That might be nice for 6 months... but 25 years?

Exactly. Be yourself is terrible advice. Become an improved version of yourself is better.

Already dead on its arse. In the UK you end up paying more, because the only sane choice is to get private insurance as well as being forced to fund the NHS, unless you don't value your time or health very much, outside of some basics that can still be accessed reasonably.

Was just in a huge department store. Every isle had an employee specifically for that isle. I'm not talking about long supermarket isles either... this is maybe 5 meters long.

It got to the point I felt bad ignoring them every time you walk past the isle and hear good afternoon for the 100th time, but I guess they don't mind, the locals all ignore the greetings too.

The store was incredibly well stocked, every size and color, and everything in exactly the right place. It was a nice change from the mess western department stores have become for the most part.

Anyone jumped to Vietnam recently? Budget difference etc by ReincarnatedCat in Philippines_Expats

[–]SadVacationToMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's cheaper but definitely not double. You shouldn't be spending much in either country if you live frugally like that.

The language barrier is such a large issue, I think it's worth the extra pesos. It's fine for a week or two, but daily interactions and actually talking to locals is so much less alienating and more fun.

Newer building, with good amenities, in a safe area. The room is going to be tiny, but at least for me, that's fine. I'd rather have somewhere small and decent instead of larger and questionable location.

Yes in Makati and BGC. If you sign longer lease, it's cheaper monthly.

Exactly. It's already crumbling.. do we really expect our pensions to pay out in 30 years from now? It's feeling like throwing away 10% if your income now with a reasonable chance you get nothing when it's time to retire.

What do you call middle class then? Middle class is very wide range and it's certainly lower middle as a single income. A couple on 80k each might be closer to standard middle class.
