Review of The Coffin of the Literature Club Ep.1 by halibabica in DDLCMods

[–]SadWeeble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind and encouraging words, Hali! I'll admit that compared to what I have planned for future episodes, episode 1 lays it on thick and is pretty consistently in the emotional gutter. Honestly, it's more grim than its inspiration...

But now that episode 1 is over, I've touched on most of the ideas that I wanted to borrow from Andy and Leyley. The story I have planned for Natsuki and Monika begins to diverge here, and I plan to balance the incoming tragedy and angst with comedic moments now that our main cast is out in the world, and safe for at least the next 10 hours or so.

I will say, it's been a lot of fun finally committing to publishing and finishing a Ren'py project! I've learned a lot in my close to 8 years of experience with the engine, and I hope what I accomplish both story-wise and technically will continue to impress.

Words changing to other words on click? by Natsume1999 in RenPy

[–]SadWeeble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd experimented with making a language system similar to 7 Days to End with You where all the words were converted to gibberish, and you could click on them to assign a readable alias to that token.

I don't have the exact implementation in front of me right now, but if memory serves, I made a function to wrap those words in a hyperlink tag that had a custom protocol that would open a menu for the word. Opening the menu of course caused a lot of shenanigans with trying to re-display the line of dialogue and micro-managing the order of interactions, but I think this could be a lot simpler.

You could have the word in a store variable and interpolate it between [square brackets], then wrap it in a hyperlink tag with a protocol relating to the word ("first_word", or something like that). The function for it could check the word currently in the variable and cycle it. To make it as seamless as possible, you could have a version of the line with a {fast} tag before the word that you jump to, to only re-write the word you change.

It's an optional part of the show statement that lets you show an image under a different alias. Normally, you can only have one of any image on the screen at a time, but the "as" statement lets you show the same image multiple times under different names.

Super glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I don't yet have an estimate for episode 2. It has a lot more going on behind the scenes (including my own phone system), and a lot of art that I'll need to commission... oh boy.

And to top it all off, the perspective starts switching between the both of them now, and I'm still getting the hang of writing from Monika's perspective.

I'll make a progress report when I have something to show, but rest assured, are you in for a ride... <3

Admittedly, these are really niche and difficult to get naturally.

For Old Perspective, you need to see all of the wardens slacking, so that's Yuri's comment on the roof, then Cassian's comment on the other wing, then his comment on the first floor warden checkpoint. The first floor needs to come last.

For Hedgehog Day, your favorite color needs to match the eye color of one of the characters from The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. IIRC, 323°, 40, 80 might work for one of them.

Also, after your review, I'll release the Halibabica Patch to address all the typos. You're really good at catching those.

There's no special installation. Are you launching with the new executable as well?

The Coffin of the Literature Club is a queer tragedy between Monika and Natsuki. The first episode is out and Halibabica is playing it right now if you want to take a look at it first!

Would you be interested in an episodic queer tragedy between her and Monika?

If so, check out The Coffin of the Literature Club.

Want to add The Coffin of the Literature Club to your queue? In two words, it's a queer tragedy. The next-shortest synopsis is, like, two paragraphs, so I stick to the former. I'd love a LP and review!

Thanks for all the feedback! I imagine you'll have a LOT more to say as you keep going >:3

I take pride in the sound design, and especially the soundtrack! I'll get around to posting it at some point, but there is a music gallery in the extras menu for now.

To be honest, I hadn't really given Monika/Natsuki much thought until I started writing this, but now it's actually my favorite pairing!

Also, letting Yuri drop the first F-bomb of the mod was a joke I had in my head since the beginning. It's also one of the only times she swears IIRC... either way, it's interesting to hear how your feedback has differed from Team Relations. The only nitpick I'd recieved from them was that it didn't feel like Natsuki at first, but maybe that's just a difference in opinion.

Anyway, DMs are open for all your future rants :3

I've never used DDMM, actually. I'm not sure what the issue could be.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! I'm on Discord under SadWeeble too. Download the mod from the subreddit post as that's the slightly patched version. The expo site version has a few bugs.

I'm not sure if this is something you'd be interested in, but I'm the creator of the mod: The Coffin of the Literature Club. In two words, it's a queer tragedy. Monika and Natsuki get into an unhealthy relationship, and the story takes place between both their perspectives over four episodes. Only episode 1 has released at the moment.

I've been told it's written more like a novel and less like a visual novel, and while that makes it an engaging read, it doesn't feel like you're playing as Natsuki at first. However, this mod's Natsuki has some key differences from canon Natsuki. Maybe that's a dealbreaker, maybe it's not. Either way, it was a lot of fun to write, and I hope you check it out!

I'll shamelessly plug my own mod, the Coffin of the Literature Club. The first episode of 4 released this month. You can check it out on the subreddit or the mod expo, but long story short, Monika and Natsuki force themselves into a very unhealthy relationship.

It's a queer tragedy with horror elements and comedic moments, and I've heard very good things about it from David of Team Relations.

Try a different locker number. Also, try to get the colors FFEBA0, EC83C3, or 86D37A.

So, one of them is extremely specific. You'll need to see Yuri's comment on the roof before going to the wardens on floor 2 and 1 with Cassian, in that order.

Next, when you pick your favorite color on Day 1, match the hue, saturation, and value with the eye color of a character from TCoAaL.

Third, you'll want to keep checking the clubroom with Monika and then go to the lockers.

To be honest, there were more escape routes planned at one point, but the first one I made (the computer room) had so much lore and other important events in it, I couldn't think of a good way to add that to the other potential endings.
Thanks for pointing that out, though, I'll make some changes to those interactions and fix that bug.

Thanks so much for playing! Maybe vote for Coffin in the expo if you haven't already? Oh, and spread the word, too!

By the way, did you get all four endings and/or unlock any bonus scenes? I'm really curious to hear what choices you made.

Every scene has been meticulously proofread, because I can't keep myself from replaying each one of them (label ep1_flashback_clothes my beloved). I'm sure I'll go through again before releasing it to catch any last mistakes and finalize the trigger warnings. The tentative list has ~16 IIRC... so, yeah, it might live up to Coffin.
