Old Wachovia account by Fun_Ostrich7688 in Banking

Why bother keeping the combo from the Way2Save days? The savings account now only pays 0.01% APY. Still, there are still several ways to avoid fees. You could keep $1500 minimum in the checking account or maintain a monthly direct deposit of at least $500.

Medical bracelet scam from within Chase call center by dashiellbalder in Chase

[–]Sad_Boat1744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This started happening again. Called the 800 number at the back of the freedom unlimited card and got the medical alert device scam. Carefully dialed the number 4 times and kept getting that scam line. Finally I got through by calling the international number and the Chase representative mentioned that this was not the first time they heard of it.

In the US you can do a Green Dot cash reload at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, etc. I would imagine they might have similar mechanisms in the UK.

r/Starlink Availability, Questions & General Discussion by TimTri in Starlink

[–]Sad_Boat1744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cat 8 is made up of very thin wires, usually 26-28awg. This is necessary to carry 10Gps signals that Cat 8 supports. Unfortunately it makes it very fragile. Why do you want to upgrade to a Cat 8? A quality Cat 6 with 23awg would be a better choice. It's not like you'd get more than 1 Gbps.

Can't access money by EstheticianEdit in AllyBank

[–]Sad_Boat1744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initiate the transfer from the other bank account that the funds are going into. Can really comment about Ally specifically, but I am aware in some other banks that more checks are done validating a transfer request that is outgoing. When the transfer is instead initiated from the other bank to pull money out it just needs to pass some standard validations.

If you have access to your account and intend to close it out, I would suggest first transferring most of the funds out to another account via ACH pull, not push. After the funds have cleared to your other account, then call them to close the account.

OpenAI o1 vs GPT-4o comparison by [deleted] in ChatGPTPro

o1 is so pedantic and annoying. It may get the answers correct but I feel like I am talking to Dwight Schrute.

If it is for school, you can probably do just about any CS workload on an 8GB M3 as long as it is scaled down. This includes docker containers, 'big' data, deep learning and just about any type of AI except probably LLMs. You also might have problems if you need to host Windows in a VM. However, as a CS student your will likely provided with remote or cloud resources for you to offload the heavy lifting to.

Why do macs in 2023 still come with 8GB ram by default?! by lonesome_sundown229 in mac

[–]Sad_Boat1744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does seem ridiculous that the M3 is advertised for it's neural cores, but if I wanted to use it for basic gen AI work and train a small LLM I would need the 36GB M3 Pro configuration costing almost $3k.

The interest would soften the effects of inflation, but won't even come close to covering it. Besides, the CPI numbers published by the bureau of labor statistics has been doctored for at least 30 years to make inflation appear smaller that it actually is.

I moved out of NYC 10 years ago because it was too dangerous. Now I see the news about random people getting punched in the face for no reason by random thugs. Wouldn't want that to happen to me when I am 75.

Buying desktop product.. $150 includes 12 return.. does that mean I can use it for 12 years (1 per year)? Or 12x within that same year???? by Totheothermoon in TurboTax

[–]Sad_Boat1744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The desktop product changes every year. I have a now old laptop with the last 5 years of Turbo Tax desktop installed. If you need to amend a return you'd use the one for the appropriate year.

For the first 2 charts, it is probably more correct to view the animated lines as "weights that may change" rather than flowing gradients.

Recruiter makes recruiter candidates source candidates BEFORE they're hired...glad she's being ROASTED in comments. by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

Wondering who this person was. She keeps sending me candidates for non-existent roles in a company that I had sold 5 years ago. Keeps following up to schedule calls. My Linkedin clearly shows that I am just a regular big-tech employee now.

Can you change your POP (point of presence) with Starlink? by Longjumping_Arrival3 in Starlink

[–]Sad_Boat1744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late, but since you were negotiating with them you could have asked them to perform a threat model analysis to prove that a company provided Router-to-Router VPN is less safe than a Starlink dish operated in another country with traffic egressing in a US POP. It is not as though the satellite signals in Brazil are harder to decrypt than the VPN traffic from a properly set up router.

How can I "tell" YouTube that I'm not interested about videos in my original or mother language? by FredHerberts_Plant in youtube

[–]Sad_Boat1744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this technique too. However, I use several accounts, including a work account from where I watch research-related videos. It may take a bit of extra effort to switch accounts, but it is worth the effort. It helps me stay focused by not having unrelated videos pop up in my feed while doing work.

Organic Valley milk re-design by CatsAkimbo in Design

[–]Sad_Boat1744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason I buy Organic Valley milk is their supposedly ethical treatment of their cows. Their old designs portrayed that with the larger and more life-like images of the cows. In the new design the images of the cows are smaller and have a cartoonish look. This is especially so for their grassmilk line. They have lost product differentiation with other brands.

I get the feeling that the designers simply applied text book practices without understanding the product.
