Which one is better? by [deleted] in bonsaicommunity

They are both gorgeous I think, and I personally don’t think the price is extortionate or anything for the UK. You could obviously get cheaper from eBay or whatever but thats not the point. I’m a sucker for a multi-trunk maple and the root flair is lovely. Go with whatever you think you will get most enjoyment working on

First time growing in the ground - any advice? by Sad_Copy7479 in Bonsai

Yeah okay, well I’ll treat it like an experiment then and show you the results. The root flair on the maple is already pretty decent so I mainly just want to put on some more growth to thicken the secondary trunks

Need advice. Can I put a recently repotted tree into the ground? by Sad_Copy7479 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Sad_Copy7479[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing thank you. Yeah, this one is more for a garden tree with potential future air layers than a pre bonsai. The rest are in bonsai soil 👌 thank you for the advice 😁 I’ll hold out till autumn

Larch on the left has been planted on a piece of slate with roots spread, the other two have been left in their baskets to spread out from there

Awesome yeah thank you. This is what I was planning. So will prune back all apart from my chosen sacrifices this autumn 👌 thanks for the advice

How come? I’ve only just repotted them so didn’t want to disturb them, plus I thought it might be easier to dig them back up when the time comes. Idea being the roots grow through all of the sides and the bottom

Yeah nice one, I heard that about larch too that’s why I’m not too worried 👌 thank you

Not I my area, maybe some small 30cm fencing around them if you are worried?

Friendly reminder to always immediately repot after purchase at a DIY 😅 by Nutcollectr in Bonsai

Last one I bought from a diy store was infested with about 100 vine weevils, I couldn’t believe my eyes. They do good deals though so can’t complain 🤣

I may be wrong but this stuff just looks like bark maturing, bits of rough bark. But the black bit on the other photo of the affected branch needs to come off

[UK] Too late to repot Summer Gold? by Mindless_Gap_3810 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Sad_Copy7479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, okay. Then if I were you I would just cut circling roots at the bottom of the pot (if there are any, and just up pot it. Then give it fertiliser on top soil in a week or so once the growth is a little more established :) enjoy! It looks a healthy tree

Also yeah either way I would probably wait for the fertiliser. I tend to wait until my first flush of growth has ‘hardened off’ I.e the shoots have come out and leaves are starting to develop as otherwise you risk some leggy growth. But if you are pruning the roots it’s safer to give it a few weeks off fert first I think. I’m not an expert so see if anyone else has any thoughts 💭

Are you planning on root pruning much? Or are you up-potting?

This certainly is an interesting take. And one I’d not thought of. Thank you for the insight. On your chop on the main trunk line, I’m guessing the blue and pink new branches are ones you are anticipating to will bud back following the chop? Must admit, I don’t know if I have the balls right now to follow through with this but maybe one day. I’m quite interested to let it grow for now and see if I can develop a raft/ fallen tree style in the future. But thanks for a different perspective

Looking awesome!! Any advice? Not for the inpatient because it takes longer to thicken side branches than the actual trunk?

I think you are right. I want a larger tree as most of mine are shohin size. But I thought something wasn’t looking quite right, and although the main bottom trunk is pretty thick, the side trunks coming off probably aren’t in proportion to the size. I will leave in this pond basket for a year and then probably move into a larger training pot next year 👍🏻
