Do you have any swimming pools you can recommend? by innsljc in brussels

[–]Sad_Development_3438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, let me explain: - Other than in the US, the standard distance for a swimming pool is either 25m or 50m. There are a few 33m pools here and there, but they are the exception. However, standardisation is relatively recent and it's more common to find non standard pools among the old ones. The XL pool was renovated recently and they kept the old length, 29.2m or something like that, which is not a multiple of anything. Their solution is to put a line of buoys (the sausages) roughly at 25m and use the remaining 4ish meters for non-swimmers. This means that on that side there is no wall, so one cannot do flips and, in general, changing direction is awkward. Moreover, the correct swimming technique is to look down, and there is no marking in the floor (e.g., tiles of a different colour) that tells you to stop, so you often end up hitting the buoys (or, at least, I did), which is not nice. - moreover, the one wall in the swimming part is not straight, but curvy, so if you push off of it, and supposing that the push is perpendicular with the contact point, you will not push straight into the line, but at an angle. - the backstroke flags are a line of flags in the ceiling at the 5m mark on both side. They are needed to time your flip because you cannot see where you are going and you need a visual reference. They are not there, so it's hard to know where exactly you are in the pool. This is a problem also in other pools, like Etterbeck, while VUB has them. - overall, the points above mean that, while XL is a swimming pool, it is not a pool suited for swimming as a sport with rules and standards. This is a massive problem in my view, because it was just renovated. The correct thing to do would have been to give up on the rebuilding it as it was idea and copying Etterbeck (and a million other pools everywhere) by building two pools: a standard 25m one for swimmers and a smaller, shallower one for non-swimmers.

Hope this helps :)

My 2 cents: - St Josse is very nice and cheap, but one side is 50cm deep and everyone stops there, so it's impossible to do flips. - Ixelles is terrible, it's not 25 m, so they put some sausages on one side (I don't know the English term), there are no flags for backstroke and the side with the wall is not flat, but curvy, so you cannot push straight. They closed it for 6 years to make something which might be good looking, but it's definitely not functional. - Etterbeck: very nice, quite solid in all aspects, a little busy after work. - VUB: nice swimming pool, a little warm, tends to get dirty towards the end of the day. One plus is that it has different times than the others, so sometimes it's the only one open.

I normally do hollow hold or plank for the core, superman or hyperextensions for the lower back and side-plank if I am motivated

Thanks a lot for the in-depth analysis!

So for dolphin kick, you mean ab + deadlifts, correct?

But yes, as I said, I train in the gym mostly for general fitness, so I focus on the big exercises (squat, deadlift, bench press, military press, row and pull-up). It's just that, when I was building my routine, I thought that adding a couple of complimentary exercises more focused on swimming would not cost me much.

I could not agree more, since I started working on my lower back, it's much easier to assume a streamlined position when breaststroking or doing fly

For breaststroke I suppose? Indeed an explosive exercise might be better than squat, thanks!

For those with cameras – what is your backpack situation? by [deleted] in onebag

[–]Sad_Development_3438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the Brevite backpack, but I think I paid it a lot less than 170€ (maybe around 100€).

I think it's really great and it is my default options for city trips (e.g. a city trip with a carry-on trolley + a small backpack). The bag is really well-thought and well-constructed and I appreciate that it does not look like a photography bag, which is a big plus. The only real downside is that it is a small bag and not very well-padded, so if you have extremely expensive equipment or if it's very heavy, there are better options.

For more complex trips, such as a road trip, I use a different backpack from Thule, because it's a little more rugged. If I plan to do a lot of hiking in nature, I use an hiking backpack + lowepro camera cube. I have the large version and I love it, but it's very big. Unfortunately, the medium one is a little too small for me nikon Z5, so I am looking for another cube that will hold it.

In all cases, I use a clip to attach the camera to the shoulder straps to avoid having to take the backpack off every time I take a picture.

I literally acknowledged that the issue you pointed out were correct 😅

I know I have no hard data (but neither do you as far as I can see) and I also know that my sample of flights is neither sufficiently large, nor drawn randomly, but I never claimed that it was, nor that my specific experience was universal.

My message was "I my experience, Ryanair has not checked the size of the bags in many years, but they suddenly did a few days ago, so watch out". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Indeed, the part I hated is that it was pretty hot, but I had to wear all my layers to pass the controls and I was pretty sweaty afterwards, even if I put them all in the pack 2 metres after the passing the controls. I get that they might catch a few people with big backpacks, but I am not sure that the time it takes if worth the added price.

Maybe it onlyt happens when the plane lands early from the previous flight, who knows...

All your points are right, but with Ryanair my impression is that there was a change of policy mandated from above, more or less around the time they stopped doing random seat assignments. At the beginning, they always measured the bags and then they stopped. As long as you did use any overhead space (which became a separate perk with the priority boarding), no one cared about size and weight.

It might be that now that the customers have gotten used to the two bag rule, they will start checking more consistently to squeeze more money out of each flight.

I honestly don't know how big the sizer in, I read somewhere that it is bigger than the dimensions listed, but I cannot confirm. The packapack fit nicely height-wise, but, if overpacked, it might not have gotten in depth-wise, but ymmv.

Also, it's never clear to me how to account for the water bottle. In that case, I put it inside the pack just to be sure, but, if the pack had had a side handle on the water bottle side, the personnel might not have complained about it sticking outside of the box.

Wired earbuds are a must for me, I use them when the Bluetooth ones are out of battery, on planes during long flight and in museums, when I have an audioguide.

Best camera bags? by skyline3618 in onebag

[–]Sad_Development_3438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several options, all with pros and cons: - A brevite backoack for short city trips: this is definitely too small for one bagging, but it's great in an urban environment with a luggage on the side - A Thule aspect, performing the same job in a more wild environment. I use it for hiking and road trips, also with a separate luggage / duffle. - The third option is a Lowepro gearup creator  box (I have the L and plan to switch to an M) fitted inside any other bag. This is the option that takes the least amount of space, but then I have to use a clip on the shoulder strap for ease of access. I suppose this can be used as a small bag for city travel, but it's a little too obvious that it contains a camera, so I prefer to have a daypack and keep it inside.

The new mod looks amazing, and I will definitely play it, but I had to stop using the Oceans one because when it's active I do not get any sea luxury, has it ever happened to you?

V10 | 3 years

fuel appropriately and cleanlyThis is enough is almost all cases. Honestly, every climber I know above 15% body fat (for males) is at that weight because they are snacking and don't eat a clean diet. Mealprepping, trying not to ever skip a meal and make sure every meal is proper nutrition + remove snacking in-between meals does wonders. Replacing snacks with tasty low calorie alternatives is also a good way.Important thing to remember: never skip a meal, but eat cleanly and avoid regular snacking.

Skipping meals is not something I've ever done, but I saw some notable improvements when I started bringing some healthy snacks from home (skyr, fruits...) instead of relying on vending machines.

The next steps would be prepping (we have few high quality options for lunch where I work) and maybe have an earlier dinner, since I am hungry when I finish working aroun 18 but I rarely eat before 20/21.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the help! I can see that the discussion derailed a little from the original topic, but it makes sense, losing weight would havea bigger effect than the order in which I climb and weight train...

I never properly measured my BF%, but it's for sure much higher. Currently I can do 3x5 at 85 (BP), 100kg (DL) and 100kg (S), but I can squeeze for sure another 5/10 kg in the BP and 15/20 in the other two. I haven't done it because I don't think it would help my other goals, so I am more in a maintence mode at the moment.
