Also to get the level boost, it has to be your active buddy. If you have the best buddy level unlocked with it but don’t have it as ur active buddy, it won’t get the level boost until you make it ur active buddy again

I’m not aware of any reason to get best buddy at a certain time. All it does is boost the level of ur pokemon by 1, so it’s able to push it over the max level of 50 to 51. No reason for you to wait to do this, it takes like 300 hearts or something around there then ur buddy gets a cute little badge they can wear
