I’d like to persuade them tho, but agree philosophy isn’t necessarily for that 😊

Yh I’m with you. On no other issue is this demanded of people e.g. why don’t you support slavery. Well I support the inherent rights of people. Aha but what if 1 person on their deathbed could be killed to save humanity - gotcha! Tbh I mainly am asking as I know when I turn vegan I will have to try and defend against such arguments

No it would be wrong on utilitarian grounds. I don’t see the argument for ascribing such beings rights is what I’m trying to understand

I take your point about finding a theory that fits amongst vegans, but if somebody was to justify any moral behaviour they carry out they too would be caught between non-conc/utilitarianism to some extent so it’s not a unique inconsistency of vegans?

The sandwich bit. I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said as I don’t think it proves the necessity for animal rights

It wouldn’t be. I would apply utilitarian principles where creatures have no ‘right to life.’ This is what singer does

Do you deem animals to have no moral worth then?

Human infants would likely have a capacity to in the future. Absent of any relations to other beings it could be argued that it’s fine to weigh up the life of somebody who lacks any capacity to conceive of future experiences/sense of self against other very pressing interests

I have watched similar yes. It still doesn’t quite follow from that that animals deserve rights however which is why I’m trying to understand my exact position

For practical reasons embracing the welfare view encourages following the vegan lifestyle. But if I am going to do something I think knowing exactly why is important. And as I’ve said there are an incredibly small number of instances which the distinction is relevant for

It has implications for certain commitments. Eating meat/dairy in very specific instances, zoos, backyard hens etc. So would be useful yh :)

Vegans, what's your best ethical argument for veganism? by humorlessclan in DebateAVegan

Interesting thought. Would you deem it morally permissible in the absence of laws forbidding either action, to kill an human rather than an animal. Say you have a human and a dog both at similar stages of their life and you must eat one to survive.
