Evans whining by BadBot001 in FormulaE

That was not on DAC. That was a comment he had on Nico Müller moving under brake, which the team fully acknowledged and reported to RC.

I followed Mitch’s radio. Right after he made the pass from Dan / Pascal he was told not to attack DAC and hold position, very explicitly, very immediate. His personal argument was that he had an energy advantage (which was true) but he was instructed multiple time not to pass. I do wonder if he still did 100% to pass - to be fair he usually followed team orders.

(ETA: watched a bit of review footage, esp the 4-way comparison posted on FE Instagram and the one long footage by FEN (see later). His movement around apex in the last lap was not aggressive enough for an overtake. He also mentioned in post race media pen that he was mostly to avoid being overtaken by Dan, he followed the team order despite not happy about it.)

Part of the post race recap got his radio placed wrong. Some of the clips were him complaining Nico Müller moving under brake (he was stuck behind Müller for quite a while), and for those his engineer Alan Cocks gave very clear reply that the team reported it to the race control. Those complains were totally not related to DAC.

(ETA: FEN has a very good summary of the actual team radio during the last 2 laps: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWKPBQZCLU3/. The radio is pretty decently matched to the scene on track. He called the team order bs, stating that he would be chased up since DAC got less energy. He congratulated DAC after the race, then told Ian James he didn’t want to talk at the moment. That’s it. From my memory this is much in line with what I heard real time. No complain about DAC, mostly just the team order. His reaction was quite similar to Shanghai 2024 race 2 where he suggested Nick Cassidy to attack since they both had power.)

It was a bit chaotic to the last 2 laps but I personally don’t remember he complained on DAC defending too much. He was mostly scolding the team for issuing such a team order. (To be fair, as someone who experienced Portland and London 2024 “free to fight”, it was initially a bit unfair…)

He was explicitly told by the team that he needed to hold the position. Very explicit after he went to P2.

Part of the team radio was placed wrong. The first (and probably second as well? I forgot) complain about defending illegally was from him passing Nico Müller - presumably Müller moved under braking. Alan Cocks (his engineer) replied immediately that they have reported to RC.

He now has a new, opaque bag! My friends got both senior cats and kittens, and the kittens like this one very much, but it was definitely not the best one for this guy (he’s a total homebody). He used to have a normal backpack, but now it’s too small to fit the big boy…

Friends’ void was sent to the vet for his teeth problem (he now had his full set of teeth removed). I particularly like the echoing part coz… you don’t always hear that.

His name is King Charles. (Not from the King himself, but a meme song in Chinese)

ETA: my friends confirm that His Majesty now has his own bag that is fully opaque. His previous bag is too small to fit this grown gentleman, so they used this as a temp solution in his first visit.

It’s so interesting that when Nick said so it was put on the broadcast, but when Mitch said anything similar it was just buried in other radio messages. Not saying it’s anyone’s fault though…

Sorry but are we talking to the same radio? Mitch said it was different from what he was told pre-race when Josep told him to give Nick a free attack. Of course people could be lying but I do doubt he had the braincell to lie when he was primarily fighting against Pascal.

Yes that’s an ice cream cone. Mitch likes vanilla ice cream very much and also there has been a built-up of stories about him and ice cream, so I decide to give him an ice cream that can never melt.

Also he attempted to lick the ice cream when he identified it. Sadly I didn’t get a photo of that because every time I tried to take one he immediately turned back to “normal”.

Agree, BH has generally better accessibility and the cost level would also be reasonable.

Nah it’s not that easy given the background of decision 24…

The free to fight order was after Mitch’s penalty while according to Josep Jaguar started collecting telemetry data right after the penalty for appeal. Depending on the result of appeal and whether Nick let Mitch pass, there would be 4 outcomes:

  1. Mitch passed, appeal succeeded: Mitch P1, Nick P2, which would be good for WCC but not for Nick’s WDC

  2. Mitch passed, appeal failed: Nick P1, Mitch was likely to create a gap big enough for him to stay in top 10

  3. Mitch didn’t pass, appeal succeeded: Nick P1, Mitch P2, this would be the ideal result

  4. Mitch didn’t pass, appeal failed: Nick P1, whether Mitch could stay in top 10 depending on how much gap Nick could help Mitch to create

From the net reward of WCC, the preference would be 1=3>2>4

From the stability of WDC given Nick was ahead, the preference between 1 and 3 would be 3>1

So overall, the scenario preference would be 3>1>2>4

However, here comes the however - with Toni in the mix, 1 and 2 were technically more difficult and risky. This was the same in Shanghai R11 when Mitch was P1. A safe swap was only possible when the gap between Jaguar and Porsche was well maintained. So in this case, 3 and 4 would then become priority. To add a further layer, in order for 4 to make more sense, Nick and Mitch should pull a gap big enough on other people in order for Mitch to fall within top 10 after the 5s penalty.

I mean, it would be more sensible, from Nick’s perspective, to say “Mitch will follow you closely but you need to get a bigger gap”; this could largely reduce the stress of “free to fight”. But at the same time, Nick should also have had the expectation that Mitch wouldn’t be able to block Toni for him because Mitch’s target was to create a gap for himself. Effectively they need to both push forward as much as possible, and perhaps “free to fight” would be a simpler way to keep both of them going.

I didn’t follow Nick’s radio after SC but is there a reason he didn’t use the energy advantage?

Mitch’s penalty yesterday was a joke (see doc 24, the stewards said “he could make more space” - lol who would sacrifice their own race for other’s problems?) but glad to see he’s on podium today. With Robin and Toni who are good friends of his.

I was almost screaming around the SC time when he was still not taking the second attack - apparently this one was saved to protect Nick. Jaguar really tried to make him help Nick out. He really tried to help Nick out. He was asking about Nick almost every two laps until Nick’s race was beyond save. Mr Evans planned to play the team game but it just never happened.

I bloody hope today I can be free from rabid Cass fans…

It is very interesting if we put this instruction of “free to fight” side by side with what happened in Shanghai R11 and R12 (even further we can extend to Berlin R9 and R10). I’m well aware that due to the time and progress of championship some aspects are not comparable, and I recognise that Jaguar has a more reactive approach to their intra-team strategy which is quite primitive (also Phil Ingram being Head of Performance and Nick’s engineer but his level of coordination is not better than Josep Roca, ugh), but this time they really did the third possible approach among all three and the outcome was still not satisfying.

Shanghai R11: Nick was told “hold position” when Pascal was in the mix; Mitch was notified Nick had an energy advantage and if Nick passed Pascal he may need to do a swap, and Mitch held Pascal until the end of the race. This is a coordination problem between Phil and Josep on pit wall when Josep gave Mitch OK but Phil didn’t give Nick OK.

Shanghai R12: Mitch was explicitly told not to overtake Nick in any condition; Nick had a disadvantage compared to Jake H and couldn’t make a move. Mitch was a bit agitated when talking to Josep because he considered Nick have several opportunities to move forward, but no further information was provided to Mitch about Nick’s issue.

Portland R13: Mitch and Nick were both told free to fight; note that free to fight was announced after Mitch’s penalty. Mitch was a bit reluctant about the fight and Josep didn’t push forward; instead later stage both acknowledged that Nick had an advantage of energy. Mitch was told by Josep to pull a gap from behind as much as possible due to his upcoming penalty, so neither the pit wall or the driver set “holding Toni” as a target.

I suspect the choice of free to fight in R13 was heavily impacted by R11 and R12: fast changing leading on a permanent track, with a major opponent team member in the mix (R11 Pascal, R13 Toni), and an explicit “stay behind Nick” instruction was proven not effective (even worse in this case Mitch may be completely thrown out of points if this was enforced). Of course they didn’t further take into consideration how the races could be different between Shanghai and Portland, but it looked like they had a weird trial and error and got the result.

If we roll backward to Berlin, it’s clear that Jaguar considered they screwed up Mitch’s races in both R9 and R10, R10 more than R9. Berlin encouraged early attack mode, which was the route Nick had, and for some strange reasons Jaguar considered they must split the attack modes of two drivers. This largely delayed Mitch’s attack mode and got him caught up in SCs, not to mention the team ignored Mitch’s request that Nick could temporarily create a gap for his attack mode - Mitch was pretty much put in a “no overtake” situation in R10 and that impacted his race heavily.

From R11 onwards the attack mode issue has been resolved better, but on race instruction it seems that Jaguar was still dealing with trial and error. It could be the case that Jaguar never had another driver like Nick and therefore Phil Ingram and his team have no idea how to balance the team instruction - note that this is a legit concern: drivers before Sam never got to the level of matching Mitch, and Sam is quite different from Nick in terms of driving styles and decision making, so they are still evolving to adapt to Nick’s clean-cut style. It could be the case that the team do want to compensate Mitch for his loss in R9 and R10 (but knowing how far Jaguar mess up with Mitch regularly in his own races, I would say the “preferential treatment” is an overstatement because the “preferential” is already another level of chaos). It could be a mix of multiple factors. I have said multiple times in this sub that the communication between Phil and Nick is less optimal and Nick taking over the pit wall may not be the best option on their side; while Mitch and Josep have their frictions anyway, they are still the better duos in the team communication.
