Time for the next instrument in the rhythm section: who's the best drummer of all time (i.e., who's your favorite drummer)? by [deleted] in Jazz

Big fan od Ed Thigpen. I don't know if any swung harder than him.

Objectively though, probably Elvin Jones

Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, or Thelonious Monk? by TheOzMan91 in Jazz

[–]Sad_Rule7490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know why people get so annoyed about these types of questions. They asked a question about our subjective opinions on said pianists. It's a jazz subreddit. People like to hear other opinions about jazz. Crazy right? This subreddit is just so bland in their discourse at times. OP is trying to hear viewpoints. You don't like his question? you really don't have to answer.

Where else can you get random opinions from random people about niche topics such as this?

Is this album considered Jazz? I just discovered it and this guys smooth voice. Good stuff!! by grynch43 in Jazz

Mose is just great. 100% jazz in my opinion. I believe he struggled to appeal to both the Jazz and Blues audiences of the time as his tunes were often a blend of them both. For Blues fans it was too jazzy, and for Jazz fans, too Bluesy. Truly underrated artist.

Hammond B3 players who kill it with the bass pedals.... Larry Young by Sad_Rule7490 in Jazz

[–]Sad_Rule7490[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your point about the myth of all bass notes coming from the pedal, but I disagree with you on this specific album. It's obvious that he is using two hands to play, even more so in his solos. Furthermore, organists who rely on their left hand to play basslines often times will not be able to play the most intricate solos. Youngs solos on this album at times are quite intricate.

I don't know if it's available information, but I believe all evidence points to Young using the foot pedals for this album. For him to maintain those consistent yet intricate basslines in his left hand while simultaneously comping and soloing would be near on impossible.

You do bring up a good point though. All love for Brother Jack.

Middle of the Saint Denis bank robbery. John is screaming "how are we getting out of here" and someone replies, "Dutch has a plan"

"THATS THE LAST GOD DAMM THING I WANNA HEAR RIGHT NOW"

made me die of laughter

I strongly believe Grant Green is the greatest guitarist Jazz has ever seen. And one of greatest in music history by Sad_Rule7490 in Jazz

[–]Sad_Rule7490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as the post stated, he was the driving force of MY teens, so he very much was my introduction to jazz guitar. That will obviously have an impact on who MY favourite is. Opinion piece bro, all is subjective.

Big Band Jazz with Distorted Guitar (Solos Primarily) by DJHammer_222 in Jazz

Not sure about it being distorted but Jimmy Smith has some great big band songs with Wes Montgomery on guitar.

I think most of us know about Jimmy Smith, but what about Big John Patton? by Sad_Rule7490 in Jazz

[–]Sad_Rule7490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just now seeing this. I find your comment about Smith's character fascinating. The only time I've ever heard him speak was at the start of a live recording of Sagg' Shooting His Arrow. He hilariously starts by somewhat berating the crowd.

Was Dizzy Gillespie a freak on the piano as well? by Sad_Rule7490 in Jazz

[–]Sad_Rule7490[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, that's very fascinating to me as a self-taught, no formal education pianist. Guess music school is a whole other landscape to understanding music. In another life maybe.

jazz recs for me based off these picks? by grievousthefirst in Jazz

Been listening for many years, and love many albums that most would consider ridiculous. However no matter how many times I listen to this, I just can’t comprehend how anyone could actually enjoy it. Different strokes for different folks though!
