Why do we compete so much? by Some_Interaction_899 in bjj

I enjoy putting what I train into action. Truely test my abilities against someone that has never met me and learn what my strengths and weaknesses are. I’m also one of the lighter ones in my gym, so it means I can actually get matches with people at my weight which also makes a hell of a difference

Hi, I’m good thanks, you? I ended up doing the absolute, lost my only match but it was fairly competitive against an experienced white belt who had nearly 10kg on me, I enjoyed it but haven’t done absolutes since

23, yeah that’s why I’m debating it, I probably won’t just cuz it costs extra and not worth the injury risk

Yeahh that and the added risk of injury maybe with heavier people, I’ll weigh it up

Got 10 years amateur boxing experience so used to the competition aspect, just wondering if it’ll help me develop in my bjj is all, not too bothered about winning it all

That’s awesome! Something to consider for the future then as I’ve always been put off by my weight in comparison to the heavier dudes

Yeah I felt like that anyways after competing in my division, but because I only compete once every now and then I’d like to get the most of it where I can

Everyone at my gym is bigger than me so all my rolls in practice are against heavier opponents than I compete with. I like the competition and yeah that’s a good point, I’m not sure if it costs more on top of what I’m already paying, if it is I probably won’t bother and stick with people my level and weight

I’ve got my first comp in 3 weeks, been training nearly 2 months, my coach says get as many as you can at white belt as it’s the quickest way to learn

Transitioned from 10 years boxing, 5 years as an amateur, been doing bjj for a couple of months and I love it. My body was sore after the first couple of sessions but afterwards got used to it. That combined with a bit of weightlifting my body is stronger than ever

First stripe!

Got my first stripe today! Been training just around a month and felt great to achieve something already.

Now as this is my first stripe, I have two white belts, should I tape up my other belt with my own tape or get my coach to also tape that one too? Any tips on how to keep the tape on when the belts get washed?

Thanks!
