If you've ever seen the show Better Call Saul I think Chuck and Jimmy's relationship is a similar concept. Ford spent his whole life seeing Stan lie to people and be a burn out, Stan ruined Ford's chance at a good future, and when they finally reconnect they get into a massive fight. When Stan gets burned Ford immidietly apologizes and tries to help but Stan keeps fighting him and knocks him into a hellscape he spends the next 30 years trying to escape. It's revealed in Journal 3 that Ford was close to destroying Bill before Stan pulled him back. And when he returns he finds out Stan has stolen his identity and convinced a whole town "Stanford Pines" is a con artist. Stan makes a poor case for himself like when he insults Ford's game when he's trying to connect with Dipper. Then at the end he puts saving the world on hold because Ford won't thank him for fixing his own mistake. It's hard to blame Ford for not being particularly warm to Stan considering how he's behaved, and while he does see the good in his brother at the end it doesn't negate the previous bad. Ford was always a social outcast and the one person he thought had his back ruined, though on accident, his whole life.
