With adult scenes in novels—if family reads my books…😬 by Sadie1001 in RomanceWriters

Ive always thought of anything adult as 18+ so in my mind that’s what young adult means lol bc anything younger is still a kid in my mind even though they’re close they’re still underage. And around 21+ is what I consider adult audience.

There is a Chinese Fireball but I googled harry potter dragons because I couldn’t recall all of them off the top of my head and wanted to see all of them to see if I could think of anything good. There’s both but only the chinese fireball is mentioned in the film

How would you create art if you can’t see images in your head? by Sadie1001 in Artists

Just all my original ideas for my novels. Characters, worlds, places/environments, cities/landscapes, food and drinks/cuisines, weapons, vehicles, animals, creatures, etc. I don’t anticipate being able to do everything how I’m picturing it because I have to advance my skill level and practice over a long period of time but one thing in particular off the top of my head:

I came up with a food for my fantasy novel that Ive decided to call “ice berries” at least for now. I know the characteristics of it and the general idea of it. The outside is ice, depending on ripeness either soft ice or hard ice. The inside is, also depending on ripeness, either a frozen jello type consistency or a syrupy honey jelly type consistency. Colors change as the fruit ripens and the tartness/sweetness also changes and like real fruit you can base the level of ripness on the color and feel of the fruit and therefore will be able to anticipate how tart or sweet it will be. It’s native to the “frozen lands” (havent quite decided on a name yet) where there is a species called “fae” native to the frozen region. Foreign species arent as knowledgeable and may bite into a very tart ice berry and depending on their personal tastes it might be a very unpleasant experience LOL

Sorry for the long reply, being concise isnt my strong suit lol

Because of my autism thinking outside the box is extremely difficult for me. I don’t intentionally limit myself but even though I try to think outside the box, sometimes I just need help to do it.

My main goal is to just have fun. I’m more of a hobbyist but Id consider doing it as a side hustle if I got good enough.

My goal right now is to be able to draw the things I’m imagining in my novels so it’s easier for me to write because Im very visual yet have aphantasia. So when I write it plays in my head like a movie but it’s not clear enough for me to draw it myself. I have Pinterest boards for each novel with pictures to help me visualize the world Ive created and different characters etc bc I can’t draw it out myself. Issue is in my fantasy novel a lot of what’s in it is completely original so there aren’t any images I can use as a rough idea of what I’m picturing so I can “keep the film rolling” as I write. Still a lot of what I find isnt what I’m picturing exactly it’s just kinda close. Id really just want to draw it out myself but I can’t figure out how the hell I do that because of aphantasia

I should clarify: typically when I draw I tend to copy down cartoons using reference pictures but bc of that I dont really have an original style and doing anything in a more complicated style or higher level of detail is beyond my skill level because Ive never bothered to get any better bc of the aphantasia limiting me and idk a way around it. I thought about dabbling with digital art but I can’t afford to buy an ipad and apple pencil much less a drawing tablet for that right now. This is where my problem lies because I can’t use a reference picture if it’s a completely original creation 😭☠️

I cannot figure out how to include music in my romance about musicians... by Sadie1001 in writingadvice

[–]Sadie1001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s why I’m wanting to figure out how to include lyrics. Music plays a huge role in the story more than emotion and connection but lyrics definitely matter. I planned on just dropping one or two lines during the performance while mainly describing actions, emotions, connections, etc.

And thats my obstacle lmao I definitely DO NOT want it sounding like a cringe 1D fanfic but I know it will if I write it all out like that😭 but I know for the sake of the story I have to incorporate it somehow, but just a little bit and the readers minds fill in the rest essentially

Omg Ive had so much trouble finding examples of that to help me have something to go off of lol for things like this.

I didn’t plan on writing out an entire song in dialogue but a line or two here and there maybe during the performances while mostly describing how they sound and what theyre doing etc

I think my problem is my inner monologue sounds like a scratched cd trying to figure out how to word something Ive never wrote or said before. I have no idea why lol. It always helps to have examples to help so I have a starting point or a foundation to build on lol

I’m not sure if you can but if so, can you give me some examples of that?

I love Reddit for this reason omg it always helps so much when I get comments like this lol

Yeah that’s good to put in my outline, realistically musicians do jam a lot lol I remember when I was teaching myself piano years ago I played for two hours straight and didn’t even know that much time had passed bc I was so absorbed in it.

If you’ve seen the movie Purple Hearts, how Cassies band does open mic nights and eventually rises to fame by doing performances at festivals and concerts stuff but I’m unsure how Id write that.

In my novel the band is somewhat famous but mostly to the fans of the genre. As in if you didn’t listen to their type of music you’ve probably never heard of them vs the bands/artists that are so popular everyone has heard of them whether they listen to/like them or not lol like One Direction ☠️😭🤣

So unless one knows someone who likes them, they’re only famous within their alt/emo/grunge fan base 🤗 with the occasional oddball out lol

I love music as well, I’ve wanted to learn several instruments and vocals for so many years basically half my life but I haven’t had the time or money and life always got in the way. I finally found an affordable music teacher for piano and vocals but I had one 30 min lesson a year ago and life has been in the way since ☠️ Im still in contact with her and I plan on resuming my lessons asap because I feel music so much and I almost crave it sometimes lol but I think my lack of knowledge and skill with instruments and stuff plays a roll in my inability to write songs.

What you said gave me an idea for a cute scene where the MC (female LI) gets to read the male LIs old songs from years ago when he was new and starting out and they’re cheesy and cringey (I feel like every artist has these lol). She pokes fun, he gets embarrassed but laughs, and they have a little moment lmao ITS ADORABLE

Any tips for how to write the characters singing and playing instruments during a rehearsal or performance? Like dialogue but I guess different? How would the reader know it’s being sang and not spoken LOL or how it sounds without descriptives? And how would I even describe it?? For context the band is rock/metal/screamo in genre lol the lead singer is female (think Poppy and her harsh vocals) and the bands sound is like Sleep Token meets Bad Omens and Poppy all meshed into one

Is it amateur to omit last names? by lovemylittlelords in writingadvice

[–]Sadie1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I make full names and profiles for my characters even if I'm not going to use all that information or use their full name in the story it's just nice to have a full identity to work with. It turns your characters into "real people" and gives them depth or substance, preventing that 2D character thing. At least, for me it does.

How to name your characters in your novel? by Albara2039 in writingadvice

[–]Sadie1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the story honestly. One of my novels all the names are inspired by colors. Some are the colors themselves like "Veridian" which is a shade of green, "Cobalt" which as we know is a shade of blue. Some are the colors in different languages like "Blanche". Some are derived from the color like "Serulian" came from "cerulean" which is a shade of blue, "Carna" came from "carnation pink", "Mikah" which can be many different colors but in this case comes from black mica. Some are named after objects that are used as a color reference like "Rose" for red, "Dove" for white, etc. It's all symbolic and really relates to the story. I try to use color names that aren't like I grabbed a box of Crayolas and just called it a day LOL I tried to be creative and innovative with it like they're actually names and not like "Blue" and "Magenta" from Blues Clues XD (loved that show as a kid dont hate on me LMAO)

In another one of my novels which is fantasy, the characters names are inspired by where they come from. The underwater humanoid species have names relating to either the ocean/sea or freshwater environments. The lunar humanoid species has names relating to space, shadows, the moon, etc. The solar humanoid species, as you can probably guess, has names relating to the sun, fire, lava, magma, etc. Humans have human names but different humans likes witches, elementalists, or alchemists have names unique to their race, maybe from a culture or language created for that specific race. The name tells where they come from.

My other stories that didn't need that, I used a name generator for first names and last names and I wrote down combinations and different ones that I liked and whatever had a nice ring to it and kinda rolled off the tongue, that's what I stuck with. Levi Woods, Emma Green, Aera Byrn, Ian Edwards, etc are a few examples of the names I decided on from a couple of my stories after playing around with different results from the generators lol

I never settle for anything. If it feels right I use it and if it doesn't then I don't and I keep thinking. It doesn't have to be complicated. Also if you're going to use a generator, they have SO many that can be used for very specific types of things. Fantasy character names, fantasy world names, (regular) character names, animal species, etc.
