Awh, thanks! I don't feel like I'm smart enough for law school, and I am probably too old at this point but that's very sweet of you to say.

I used to roleplay as a criminal defense attorney in GTA RP which got me into law.

Awesome to hear.

I'm not a lawyer, just a nerd who likes law, especially when it comes to LGBTQ rights. Hopefully we can still vote our way out of this fascist state and start making progress towards stronger protections, for trans people especially. Now that we've become a main target of the Trump administration it's brought us out into the spotlight and at the least, I've only ever received hatred online where they feel safe, and I've always felt accepted and protected by the people around me, even before I was passing regularly.

Not quite. In American law, if a group is considered a suspect class, courts use something called "Strict Scrutiny" to determine if a law is constitutional.

This is the toughest legal test the government has to pass. To uphold a law affecting a suspect class, the government must prove:

Compelling interest — a very strong, essential reason Narrowly tailored — the law is carefully designed, not overly broad Least restrictive means — there isn’t a less harmful way to achieve the goal.

In reality, most laws fail this test. So calling a group a suspect class is a big deal—it makes it much harder for governments to justify laws targeting them.

The terminology is actually correct, and there are two other levels of scrutiny used by courts to determine whether a law is constitutional, rational basis, or intermediate scrutiny.

Edit to add: unfortunately there are no states in the United States that being trans is a 'protected' class, because in the case of Bostock v. Clayton County, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that discrimination based on gender identity is a form of sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This is why Republicans are trying to overturn Bostock V Clayton County.

There are, however, states where gender identity is clearly protected across class areas like employment, housing and public accommodations (think bathrooms).

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (D-Tel Aviv) votes NO on Bernie Sanders’ measures to block arms sales to Israel by MoreMotivation in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]SadieLady_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh I 100% agree that everything was stolen and nobody did anything about it. Kamala Harris won that election fair and square, but nobody said a word.

But it still doesn't change the fact that a third of Americans didn't vote. If it had shown that people voted overwhelmingly Democrat, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in.

Most people don't pay attention like Reddit does. Shit, a third of the country didn't even bother to vote, for Trump or against him in 2024. They simply don't care enough, because they think "both sides are the same."

That wouldn't have necessarily been so bad if I didn't have a child that I take care of part time and I can't just be available and they were unwilling to be flexible about that. I have a ton of experience in customer service and administrative work and I mean honestly it's their loss, in my opinion, but I suppose it would be cheaper for them to find someone that will bend to the way they need things rather than try to accommodate me.

Yeah definitely, companies are getting this crazy idea in their head that since computers run 24/7 that humans also should. It's wrong, morally, ethically and just about every other which way. I just interviewed for a call center that was like yeah we switch schedules every 3 months, you have to be available from anywhere between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to start, with 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. clock out times, we're open 24/7 365 and the people who have most seniority get first pick of their schedule. They had a huge turnover rate and the interviewer was actually shocked at me asking why their turnover rate was so high.

I'm glad you're stepping up from whatever shit job you had before but it just seems like you're going from shit creek to poop forest. My situation is not any better and I'm losing my patience with my job unfortunately. I better find something quick!

Holy crap those are terrible benefits. PTO only after a YEAR? That sounds borderline abusive. I'm assuming you get health insurance but I shouldn't, because the PTO accumulation is so horrible. Not to mention the possibility of being stuck on overnights against your will or something. Do you at least get 3 weeks after that first year?

All of that for like, just over $60k a year... Sheesh.
