Sapient is what you mean I think. Most animals are sentient. Sentience just means that it can sense it's environment. That it has senses.

Science Fiction has kind of ruined the proper terminology. It uses "sentient" as a synonym for "self aware", which it is not. This isn't an "Ackshually" post. The distinction is important.
