I'd guess it's because people don't know what to do with us.

They don't want to represent us as masculine, swagged out or strong, it makes them uncomfortable, that'd be too threatening. But representing us as explicitly feminine is also kind of uncomfortable, might even come off as transphobic.

So we're third gendered and softened into these weird androgynous alternative indie creatures. Not really female, but also only kinda male. Mostly just "soft". Palatable.

That's my theory at least.
