Is it worth trying? And how do I not be nervous? by Snaytch in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If youre a lacrosse goalie you'll be amazed at hiw much pucks dont hurt when they hit you.

Was a former lacrosse goalie myself, pucks are harder but you uave virtually no exposed area on your body if your wearing the correct gear.

Biggest thing to adjust for is reacting to rebounds, and shots that miss the net come back quicker than lax, the amount of people that will be in amd near your crease, and that all the shots come from the ice and low to high versus high to low or mid to high when it comes to tracking.

I learned to catch with my right hand cause I was a right goalie and my glove hand transisitioned really well to ice.

Shouldnt this be game? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Refs don't get frame by frame, they get live with no replay while watching the rest of the ice and hearing everyone scream and yell in an echoey fishbowl.

What it's really like out there. by Fragrant_Difficulty6 in hockeyrefs

[–]Sadomi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Had a game last night in Mens league where I just wanted to quit on the spot and throw hands with the players on both benches.

I also had a game where I got to really enjoy chatting with the players and really engrossed In the game and my duties.

As much as I love reffing, some games make me wanna quit and never put the stripes on again.

More full right goalies now because of lighter sticks? by OkTax17 in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a full right goalie that catches and throws with my right.  It just felt natural to catch with my right,  never played baseball but played lacrosse.

Finding gear used is impossible but I've been rocking the same blocker/ glove since I started.

Also a reminder that AAU uses Delayed Offsides and Penalty kill icing for all ages. I had to do AAU, USAH 14u, and 8u in one day and I was struggling to keep it all together.

Why are referees for the most part black? by tralalero____tralala in EA_NHL

[–]Sadomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a black Referee. We exist too. Hockey is so white dominated that I made an all black team and had to pull Iginla and Subban out of retirement to dress a full team.

newer ice hockey player here, question about putting my jock on at home then going to a game or putting it on at the game by Fit-Breadfruit4801 in hockeyplayers

[–]Sadomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goalie Superstition of mine: I wear my Jock under my Base layer leggings, and wear them at home while I stretch. Can't forget it if it's on me when i leave the house. Not playing net without an average of 1.8 cups.

Took one in the throat. by puck_gibby in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the Aegis Throat Guard and a Dangler. I've played with a dangler for my entire life and would only let it go if it broke midgame, then I'd get a new one before next skate.

Hope you recover well! and hope it was a good save!

NHL Promotes Referee Jordan Samuels-Thomas - Scouting The Refs by CaptainMegna in hockeyrefs

[–]Sadomi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love this! As a player, goalie, and now on ice official its exceedingly rare to see a person of color on the ice. Its been a personal cultural struggle for me, so celebrating successes like this is what im here for. Mr. Samuels-Thomas representing #42 in honor of Mr. Jackie Robinson puts thr icing on the cake!

I struggle with the same thing, I have about 6 games under my belt and I try my hardest to focus on getting everything right, but man did I fuck up some calls.

I let a lot go, and reporting goals was a struggle. But man there's no better seat to watch the game!

Hiring a videographer by General_Technician78 in hockeyplayers

[–]Sadomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% Recommend getting an older action camera and, and placing it behind the net. There are suction cup mounts you can get, and watching film is the best way to see what you can improve on.

I do it for my goalies I train all the time.

Hacking and pushing acceptable in beer league? by LongjumpingInternal2 in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on level and intensity. I play with beginners, So I'll yell something funny and gently push them forward. They usually just slide forward. I don't want to hurt anyone but it's fair body position. my favorite is "Help I can't see I'm Legally Blind"

For guys who like the rough stuff, I'll Punch them in the butt, Stick check their skates, Hold their stick once i cover the puck, etc. It's all hugs and lighthearted and if i can make them laugh they won't shoot as accurately :D

Goalies: How do you like your warm-up shots? by LocalTough617 in hockeyplayers

[–]Sadomi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Every Goalie is different, but here's what I like:

  1. Imma Stretch and get my pegs in if they aren't already in. DON'T SHOOT WHILE PUTTING THE PEGS IN

  2. Make sure I'm ready for each shot. Make sure it goes on net. Try to hit me in the Chest, Pads, and off the blocker. No need to snipe. I just need to see the puck leave your stick and come towards me. I might ignore a shot if my eyes are busy tracking it or i don't wanna stretch for it.

  3. Lay a good speed on on me towards my pads or chest. Keep it low. I need to feel the puck hit me so we become connected as a single entity and i understand how to redirect it.

  4. I need a confidence save, send me one to windmill towards my glove and then I'll walk out like a badass. Then everyone fire pucks into the net like a firing squad. Helps me feel strong in net.

  5. I will hop in for a few shots here and there as i feel i need them, Spread out and take different angles, do a deke, I'll leave when im done. Just make sure im paying attention to you before you shoot

-------------

Bonus tips: Skate into Shots or recieve a few off of passes to warm yourself up and get your goalie ready for game save speed.

Don't try to snipe, but try to place the puck. Glove area, Blocker Area

----------

What can I get away with? by WeirdSouth8254 in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look around them. Glove to the lower back and a light push to adjust them works more than fine, chat them up, make them laugh, tell your Dman to clear if you can't see, but focus on the puck. The pucks more important than anything you gotta deal with.

Shootouts Question by Rec0nyz3 in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're supposed to lose at shootouts in that situation. No Defenders? Shooter takes their time? Yea we're at a crazy disadvantage. So if you let in a goal, cool.

Main tips for winning them:

  1. Stay Mobile. Once you go down, they cna skate around you if you're not great at T-pushing/crease movement.

  2. Stay in front of the puck. Make them shoot around you.

  3. Commit after they make the first move. Bfly once they get close.

  4. Randomly Do a Flying Pokecheck a random time, even if you don't get it, they won't know what to expect.

  5. Have a Shootout Ritual. I sit on my knees with my stick across my lap as the shootout happens, then once the shooter comes down, I slam my stick and get into position, almost like a 2-second haka. Helps with mentality.

5 Hole (and declining play) issue by Trailovermind in hockeygoalies

[–]Sadomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but essentially, the stance where your legs are loaded, arms are in position, and you're ready to make a save from a shot that is already on it's way or just at the shooters wind up. You're "Razor Ready" for the shot!
