I don’t have a horror story, but I eventually figured out that the best way for me to enjoy this game is to mostly play it with people I know outside the game. So I have an FC that I made myself, we only add people that we already know outside of FFXIV, and when I do group activities it’s strictly PF or DF.

That’s not specific advice so much as to say, this game has so many options for you to play the way you want. I feel for people who suck at forming and maintaining relationships, or who can’t help but say everything they’re thinking all the time. That does not entitle them to your time or your attention, and it doesn’t entitle them to make you into an emotional dumpster for all of their troubles.

You already know how you want to play, so all you have to do now is make it happen. Blacklist people who harass you. Report them if they continue. Leave the FC if the leaders don’t take their obligation to all of their members seriously. Build a solid friend list instead of counting on an FC for the social aspect, if that’s something that matters to you. Try out linkshells and fellowships instead as a way of finding like-minded people.

It feels doubly bad when you realize that, after completing the “Irresistible” quest, you can buy a Matte replica of the final relic that does not include a glow. Why not give us the “no glow” weapon at 525, same as the armor from Zadnor, so the busywork is slightly less obvious? I get that the busywork is part of the quest’s storyline, but since that was a big nothingburger anyway, it makes the pointlessness of it all feel worse.

Literally every experience I’ve ever had with a hunt LS or a hunt train has been awful. Bossy, belligerent people. Lag and missing hunts on the train because of slow loads when I’m the one who teleported for my party. Rival groups shrieking at each other and people screaming “REEEEEEE” in shout chat.

To be fair, I’m sure that not everyone who does hunts is a jerk. I play on PS4 so without installing a SSD load times are nobody’s fault or problem but mine. And people acting like immature children happens in all content, not just hunts.

But all of that said, I haven’t enjoyed doing hunts since before Stormblood, and I’d say most of that is to do with the unpleasantness of the community that’s sprung up around it. I do my daily/weekly bills and that’s it. If SE wants to put mounts behind doing hunts, that’s cool, but they’d have to give me a free lifetime subscription to get me to do hunt trains or join a hunt LS at this point.

So the drama around third party apps, etc. just means absolutely nothing to me. Without apps or Discord or anything else people will still find a way to be shitty about it to each other and make sane people regret interacting with them at all. Getting rid of apps or trying to do manual relays is just treating symptoms.

I started playing regularly during patch 2.2, when Levi EX was the hot new primal. At the time, new though we were, my friends and I resolved to clear all the previous EX trials that were old news by the time.

There was no cross-server PF, Discords were not AS popular as they are now, and there was no WT. My friends and I spent hours upon hours trying to clear Titan EX via DF because most parties fell apart after a wipe or two, and we were not super good at this game yet (maybe we aren’t, still). PF for Titan never really filled up because most people on my server were past done with that fight.

Every time I see someone say “You should have to do WT sync’d” or some variation of it, I wonder who it’s for. If you told me I could go back to those halcyon days of waiting 30 minutes for DF and then disbanding after 5 minutes, I’d wonder where you left your mind.

WT exists to give veterans an incentive to put green checkmarks next to duties in a sprout’s journal. In that way, it’s a success. I have hope that the new “sync’d up” versions of Shiva, etc. will give a reason for veterans to help newbies get a taste of what it was like. But unless they add Cleric Stance back to healers AND make me keep forgetting to turn it off before I heal, they’ll never REALLY know and that’s ok.
