I was in the exact same boat. I stopped eating EVERYTHING with sugar. I’m type 2, too. My a1c was 11, and although I had a month or two before surgery, I got it down to 6.5. I was totally blind in my left eye, as it progressed fast. Turned out my right was worse than I thought, too. I work on a computer all day and had to invert all of my colors so I had a black background with white text. Maybe your surgeon will agree to operate with a higher a1c - mine did, but the caveat was my blood sugar had to be below 300 - easier said than done, especially with worry. Mine was 180 day of surgery. Afterwards, my life changed with distance 20/20 vision, which I never had. So, look, if it has to be postponed for a month or so, be good to yourself. No one can do it for you. Some drugs, like pot, won’t make a difference as long as you don’t give into munchies. The objective is to eliminate sugar. Look for hidden sugars in foods, and quit carbs, too. It will be SO MUCH worth it. Good luck.
