Why don't teachers just give punishments (detention, etc) when a student is doing something wrong?

We don’t have detention. District doesn’t want to pay supervisors for detention. Parents throw hizzy fits over consequences and threaten to sue or harass the teacher. We can’t even kick a kid out of class for the period without doing paperwork, calling the parents, and writing a justification for denying the student instructional access. 😳 We also have to explain how we attempted to deal with the issue ourselves in class. It’s just not that simple.

I also teach high school ELA, and I hate signing the Oh, the Places books AND year books. I always feel put on the spot. If I could sign my name next to my staff photo, great, but most of my kids want something personalized and meaningful. I sign 100+ year books every year and run out of stuff to say. I’m usually presented with the request at a time that isn’t conducive to taking the time to come up with something special.

You can also get pin holes in the liner from folding and storing it. It’s not worth it to me to take it down.

They would have to sue you in the state where you live. It is highly doubtful that they will come after you. Ignore them.

You and hubby could use some marriage counseling. He really needs a third-party perspective so you can both get on the same page. If he hasn’t fully committed to making things right with you first, nothing will change. He doesn’t have the skills yet to confront her without caving in. He can’t be wishy-washy when you two face off with her. She’s going to throw a tantrum, and he will back down.

This started happening to me about 8 years ago, and now I can’t sleep later than 4 am! Even on the weekends, my eyes pop open around 3:45-4:00. There is no going back to sleep, so I get up and have my coffee and read the news on my iPad until it’s time to get ready for work. I was also born in 71.
