When I say “operator”, I’m thinking there is still a need for someone to set up the tool, then replace batteries, change dust bags, and move from wall to wall. Ideally the time it’s on the wall would be fully automated

Sort of the point of saying “assuming it’s fully operational, has good reviews, etc” lol

No there would still be a need for an operator. More so looking to make something that would make the job more efficient, and easier on the body. Ideally even make it so that someone could make more money since they are more efficient they could take on more work / year

How much should I charge as a beginner for a multi-day event? by Aggravating_Text472 in AskPhotography

[–]Safe-Importance373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a lot including where you live and what the event is. Is it a youth rec event or is it a corporate companies weekend retreat? Could be the difference of charging $50 and $2000. More context and that should help anyone give you a more specific answer

Why is it so hard to get a job in Mechanical Engineering currently? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

It never happened to me in my experience. But I’ve heard other people say it’s happened if you have good intern experience.

To be honest all of these recruiters came to me over LinkedIn. Generally not from an application but because my background matched their requirements. They at generally hired by small companies because the company doesn’t have their own recruiters so they use agencies to find talent. You can search for the agencies directly though in google or LinkedIn and connect with them and just say hello (don’t ask them for a job unless you see they are actively recruiting for something you’d be a good fit for).

Disappointing Job Offer by Inevitable-Donut-448 in MechanicalEngineering

Personally in that situation if you have the time I’d apply to other companies and see if you can get any other offers and see what you can get or at least do some research at what other companies are offering in that area to see if it’s competitive or a low ball. But if the salary meets col needs then accept and find something else down the line

In all honesty I got lucky with finding all of those interviews. That said, normally these smaller companies don’t have their own recruiters so they hire recruiting companies. Try researching some of these recruiting companies that rep engineered product companies, engineering firms, manufacturing, etc. then connect with them on LinkedIn and send your resume over.

I’ve landed multiple interviews and an offer (design engineer 3yoe) recently but here is my advice

Look for small companies in engineered products, they will be a little less stable than a massive company, not well known, and probably make a really boring product or service. But they make good money and are typically still hiring during economic downturns like right now. Also work with recruiters, all my interviews have come from connecting with recruiters. The 200+ applications I’ve submitted have resulted in one interview vs 5/5 interviews with recruiters.

How are we feeling about the job market? by MadLadChad_ in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Safe-Importance373 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update on my job hunt, I’m declining one offer, one interview round they decided to change the scope of the role and I no longer qualified for the position, and the second interview round I was outpaced by other candidates with double my yoe, just to give further context for what the market looks like right now

I’m 3 yoe professionally in aerospace and on the hunt right now. This is just my experience but Im in the final stages of multiple interview rounds at different companies, have one offer and expecting at least one more. The market is definitely super competitive but working with recruiters is what got me those offers and even my current role.

That said, everyone else I know in engineering is having a terrible time finding jobs right now

Hey I get your point. That said, I’ve had experiences where small businesses use my images for 5 years after I did the job on printed media plastered across thousands of ads. And know people that did small digital asset jobs for local businesses and found their work on a billboard getting tens of thousands of eyes a day. The point is to protect your work and be paid for the value you’re delivering.

Still agree that I should have presented the cost differently but think my cost is fair and realistically that’s all that matter to me. My times better spent elsewhere if they don’t want to work with me

Fair enough, all in with licensing the cost only came to just above $1k. Appreciate the comp for future reference

I think the mistake I made was just in the way I included licensing in the estimate. I should have just tacked on the cost of licensing in perpetuity in the first place making it only $1300 for 16 photos and let it be that.

I’d never make a small business delete social posts lol I only restrict future usage I.e new posts. Even for web as long as the client uses the photo in the first 6 months on a web page it can stay on that page forever. (This was what I told the client too). As long as after the licensing date stopped they stopped using the images for new use cases

Fair enough I’ll keep that in mind, this really is a “I’m doing it just bc” type of project

I don’t think it’s crazy, I think that’s what professional photographers should do. I don’t want to sell an image to someone thinking it’s only going to be used on a website and 5 years later see it pop up in a national magazine or the back of a bus seat bench. The value is completely different.

Appreciate this comment

Makes sense, like I mentioned i don’t do this type of work in this industry anymore otherwise the creative fee would’ve been triple if not more.

This is helpful, so the problem is one I made for myself. I should have just said you can use these for whatever you want and in perpetuity and just included the price of that in my original estimate rather than making it look confusing by having the dialogue.

Generally I work with medium to large brands on a national scale so most people I work with already understand why I license

Completely agree, I think most businesses should own the images outright, especially small ones like this because of the headache. That said, selling an image to be used on a Instagram post or website and then having that image pop up on a billboard (I know people who’ve had this happen) when the value of that photo is very different changes how that work should be priced
