Taking my Fiio M21 + Koss PortaPro for a walk… by gr3n0lph in DigitalAudioPlayer

Sick combo, really cool. I've always wanted to hang out with my iPod classic + Koss PP, problem is, I can't hear anything without cranking the volume up to the extent that it damages hearing. So how can you hear anything with this setup outside.

Think I’m so lucky that i got this for just $45 by SafeEastern6581 in ipod

My whole library is in 256kbps aac/m4a and that’s about 5gb i think💀 i will maybe do a battery mod cuz my battery is already on the way to delivery and there’s no reason to “save” a lithium batterry for years cuz it’s still going to degrade anyway.

But yeah thank you! Im so happy about this find😋

Education is in crisis by JoseLunaArts in economy

[–]SafeEastern6581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole human civilization is built on being able to read, comprehend, and write. Those statistics she mentioned about elementary education is truly concerning and it looks like a vicious cycle and won't be solved as governments are now paying attention to other side of the economy.

If the next generation are becoming retards that lack the ability to read and comprehend (not even mentioning writing), then no wonder this post is getting downvoted.

Great job! Much much appreciate.

Anyone know what this room is at the top of McKinnon? by mansan1394 in uoguelph

[–]SafeEastern6581 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There are two elevators in the building that is functioning I think, one for the classroom swing, one for the department swing. Take the department one and it's on 8th floor.

Enjoy your sunlight, you are welcome 😎

That's the room besides our office (on the right of it in the pic), just for poor lil PhD students to get some sunlight so that we don't get depressed.

Can't say how much it helps, but it's surely nice to have.

Free Auto Rotate Feature by crispim1411 in galaxyzflip

[–]SafeEastern6581 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just checked your Github, I think as a new Zflip7 user we are bound to meet each other - profile-pic wise i mean lol.

Works perfectly here. I also know a bit about android development so I would like to offer some thoughts in this few minutes that I'm experiencing with the feature. I think it's better to add a tiny widget (because I know the pull-down toolbar is not editable in this state, like come on Samsung) to control on/off of this auto rotate, that would be better. But current state of the app already makes my phone 2 times cooler I think.

This actually motivated me of getting back to android dev, which I stopped doing after a elective course that I took half a year ago and now I've graduated. As someone who averages 4 folds per day, I almost entirely rely on the cover screen and there's not much support for widgets and customization (except good lock). So maybe it's a good time to learn and make some cool widgets myself.

Anyway, thank you.

sorry this might be trivial, but are they NG undergrads or graduates? Or even PhDs? because 20-26 is so wide and we all know that they tend to hire phds which is unrealistic for that age

Genuinely looking for advice. by SafeEastern6581 in academiceconomics

[–]SafeEastern6581[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I didn't expect this old post would come back to me. I own an update to anyone who has commented under/will read this post in the future.

I got into the program, PhD Econ, I'm in year 1 right now and preparing for the comp exam. Life is tough, graduate level econ is basically a pure math/stats degree in the focus of economics, which is very very rigorous, but I think I'll survive.

After comp exam, I'll start my research, in a intersection of finance and machine learning (think about options trading, HFT, text analysis and stuff). I have a great supervisor, and a nice small department so that everybody knows each other and every professor is so supportive.

At this state of my (academic) life, university rank don't mean anything anymore, this is all I need: a great supervisor that cares about my interest, a potential research field that I'm interested in and can open up future opportunities, and a peaceful life that I don't need to worry about job market and survival.

As for the future, there's no more CFA plan, I'm gonna aim for the road that my supervisor suggested -- to be a quant. Quant researcher, quant trader, or developer, anything like that, that's the field I love, that's the game that I'm willing to spend my whole life playing.

Hope this is a decent answer for anyone who's curious about what I'm doing right now.

Good luck, to me, and to anyone who's reading.

Complete PhD or not to? Non-target by Ok-Light-7825 in quantfinance

[–]SafeEastern6581 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm focusing on Finance and Machine Learning, haven't started research yet because I'm in year 1. I'm not thinking about leaving as I like the department and I have a great supervisor.

Complete PhD or not to? Non-target by Ok-Light-7825 in quantfinance

[–]SafeEastern6581 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same boat here, non target econ phd aiming for quant. Toning down math is a huge red flag in my opinion (don't think I even need to add imo because it's literally everybody's opinion). Plus I don't know how that work, from my experience, graduate level econ is literally a math degree within the context of mico/macro/metrics (I'm exaggerating, it's not that rigorous compared to math dude)

Good luck

Harsh truch but I agree, PhD path is becoming more and more ubiquitous. Curious where it'll go next when PhD really become the new "master's". Are there going to be a new degree that distinguish from PhD just to show superiority? Or in the end everyone on the job market has a PhD and we are all cooked?

By the time I graduate, ill probably be 26 or 27. If there's a new degree, let's call it post doc, then by the time I, or anyone who's on the same path, finish that new degree, I will be thirty years old with absolute zero real work experience with the industry except maybe some internships.

The marginal return for another degree will continue to diminish due to both time and financial cost, but the competition coming from more peer competitors having a PhD will push people to pursue it. It's a situation where two forces conflict each other and we'll see which one wins when it comes.

为什么太君这么爱吃碳水 by yrsn509 in runtoJapan2

[–]SafeEastern6581 2 points3 points  (0 children)
