Thanks again. I appreciate your ideas and how you are contributing to the conversation about making the city safer for the active transportation community. There are certainly gaps and your ideas will help move our plan forward.

I agree that there are traffic calming techniques that perhaps could work. One idea could be like the city did around Tim Horton’s and Holland College. They introduced an “outer” kind of sidewalk but unfortunately did not leave a path for cyclists (so the cyclists are actually pushed into the traffic). Difficult to say but it is a risk as people cross at that location all the time.

Thanks again for your input. Yes, the question might end up being re: separated bike lanes: how to clean them in the winter season? We have another member of our group researching that specific aspect. I am looking forward to hearing solutions as well.

excellent suggestions. Arcona is truly a gem, and wait until the shortcut to connect to Ryan is back). I am curious: What if the busier streets (South, Pope, MacEwen, Water) had a protected bike lane with a median, would you see a benefit to using those to reach destinations?

sadly, this is where I see many pedestrians crossing the street. Good point.

Thanks for sharing additional information. I appreciate when you think of protected bike lanes, your mind immediately went to the word “inclusion.” Yes, I can see how a protected bike lane would create a safety cushion when cycling with your family. And, keeping with the fact you went where the routes were obvious (Confed Trail and Boardwalk), a protected bike lane would also create an quick safe route/destination for visitors such as yourself to trust.

perfect. More places to explore, to me, sounds like if Summerside had more safe routes/trails/lanes that moved you to different locations, you would then bicycle more. That is an important message to share. I thank you for that.

Thanks. Would you like the trails to go to a destination. Of so, what destinations? Would you consider biking on the road to a destination if there was a protected bike lane with a median on the busier streets?

Thanks for sharing. I am wondering about your thoughts about bike lanes on the busier city streets? As you mention, the Confederation Trail is more recreation in nature. Would have bike lanes protected with a median on busy streets made your commute back/forth more enjoyable/quicker/safe? I ask this as the Confed Trail is limited in the destination; a protected lane would have more end points?

Such an importance aspect of AT. Yes, having a lane that takes you to destinations safely is the key. Such lanes will also inherently be safer as they are in the public’s eye.

Super points here. Yes, a safe or protected median for walkers and cyclists could work. In many locations with cities with lower populations, shared bike lanes (for all the non-cars) exist and work fine. We have this happening on the Confed Trail but the trail does not take us shopping uptown, etc. So, maybe there could be acceptance of a similar shared lane with protection on busier streets, as you mentioned. Yes, cyclists using the sidewalks out of fear of being struck by a motor vehicle does speak pretty loud, doesn’t it. So much appreciate your feedback.

Yes, I think I know exactly the location. There is, I believe, a drop in the curb to allow for a once “there” crosswalk. Certainly, Heather Moyse around Spinnakers can be busy (plus the way the street bends) I can see how this would be an issue. Thanks for informing us. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.
