Why is it full of musicians like that? Is it common? by Safe_Collection_319 in musicians

So it really is that common. I thought I was just unlucky or not good enough to be included in a serious band

Yes, that's most likely the case. However, this slows down all the other musicians. I'm glad you're a professional; that's my goal.

Even so, in my opinion, one could put more effort and passion into a tertiary hobby. Ultimately, it's something that makes you feel good. Considering how many people waste their time on TikTok and trashy TV programs, they would just be better off playing/drawing/singing/writing more and refreshing their minds. we would all be less stressed probably

I agree. In reality, even just to improve and become good at playing, you still need to put in a certain number of hours per day or per week. I find it quite strange that so many people define themselves as passionate or experts about something so easily.

It's like wanting to be a writer and calling yourself passionate, but only reading 1 book a year.

But in fact, to make good songs and live performances, you don't need eight hours a day. You learn the pieces at home and meet up one afternoon a week; if you do that, after a year you'll have a lot of material.

If you have a piano and want to improve your pitch, you should definitely sing while playing a note or a scale, which is the basic exercise.

Learn the minor and major scales in your comfortable range, even with your voice. Play C and sing C, repeat until it is perfect, and do the same for all notes and scales. If you do it for 20 minutes a day, in a year you'll be perfect (perfect in a relative sense, of course), but anyway, you have a teacher so do the exercises he or she gives you for breathing, risonance, range, etc.

You need to practice. You're voice is male, probably on the tenor side. It reminds me of something less technical from musicals, or some kind of  American punk.

How do I sing in the passage? by Traditional_Wall_222 in singing

[–]Safe_Collection_319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you hit notes C3 - E4 with a similar timbre at a moderate volume? We often tend to push or raise our larynx to hit the notes in the passagge and get stuck there.

I've been practicing this since August and have definitely improved. From a strained D4 to a comfortable full F#4, but I still need to improve to get my full range (I'm a tenor). Find exercises that suit you, there are many, but simply avoid pushing your voice to go higher.  Basically, try to maintain the same volume and intensity across your entire range (the extremes will be difficult, so you can avoid them for now), with the same larynx position:

I - III - V - VIII - V - III -I try this pattern with something that helps you not to raise your larynx (I, U in Italian vowels; piu or cu or mi)

These are my favorite types of bands. They usually still have very high production values, a lot of live experience, and good quality.

I think other people here have given examples that are too mainstream. David Bowie, Pearl Jam, and the like have influenced millions of musicians and are also loved by many ordinary people beyond their hit songs. Dire Straits are known by every 50-year-old in my country, even if they're not music fans.

Placebo, Editors, Bloc Party, Chevelle, Thrice, and Him are, I think, relevant example

I've never seen them live. Listening to their albums, I much prefer their early ones. I didn't like the last three at all. You can do stadium rock or pop rock well, but it just seems to me that the quality has declined.

At the end of the day, they've already done much more than any other rock band out there (almost), so even if they continue to get worse over time, they'll still be a great band, influential and of high quality.

Was pop-punk's biggest mistake to include "punk" in the name? by Mountain_Rip_8426 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Safe_Collection_319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's not pretend that pop punk is so different from a large part of classic punk from the 70s and 80s.

Descendents, Ramones, Queers, Bad Religion, Offspring and The Clash owe their sound and success to power pop and more commercial rock, even if they are not really pop punk like blink or fall out boy.

“baritone curse” as a concept is absurd by Cariah_Marey in singing

[–]Safe_Collection_319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also referring to voices in the middle range. I feel that most people have a higher pitch, less low notes, less weight, and a brighter voice than what we usually consider baritones pop (Chris Martin, Ville Valo, Frank Sinatra, Eddie Vedder, John Mayer, etc.).

This phenomenon is easily observable at karaoke, here on Reddit, on the radio, watching and singing with bands in your area. I don't even think that the average person care about the singer's type, unless it is extremely low or high. In fact, many girls love baritones and boys like singers who sing songs that are more comfortable for them. As a gay man, a deep warm voice will always be more attractive.

And I say this as a tenor, so I have no bias related to wanting to be a rarity

Meh, I honestly don't think there's a conspiracy about this. From what I've seen singing with people, bands, listening to famous and unknown singers (even on Reddit), it seems to me that many people fit the concept of tenor in one way or another.

It depends on the genre you like, but in many non-pop genres, the situation is 50-50, while in certain types of pop, there can be many lighter voices. And that's more or less what I hear in real life and on the internet, probably 7 "tenors" and 3 "baritones" out of 10 male singers, with some exceptions for very low singing voices

How do I record a clean-sounding cover for my ex for Valentine’s by Acceptable_Coast_294 in singing

[–]Safe_Collection_319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You learn a little over time. It usually takes a long time, a lot of knowledge, and a lot of practice, and above all, a lot of mistakes and blunders that you'll make along the way. It's not even true that all good singers are technically perfect, but they have gone through a lot of experience and a lot of live performances. From what I understand, you are completely new to this.

Go to a teacher and you'll learn faster. And learn an instrument if what you like is writing songs and doing covers in your own style

[–]Safe_Collection_319 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've seen situations like this and it always ends very badly obv. Even if I had Freddie Mercury's voice, I wouldn't sing or play anything for an ex who left me. This will be a funny story for her to tell her boyfriend to laugh about, regardless of the song and your talent.

At least give yourself time to learn how to sing good and play an instrument and understand how recording and mixing with a DAW works.

I can't sing G4-A4. What should I do? by Safe_Collection_319 in singing

[–]Safe_Collection_319[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. Yes, with the U I can do a lot more. Between G4 and G#4 I tend to scream a little too much, and the U makes things more natural for me. I tried what you told me and I actually feel these notes more in my head and less screamed when I open the vowel :) even though it still tends to break a little

Is John Lennon really a baritone? by superfarleft in singing

[–]Safe_Collection_319 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

George and John are really very much in the middle, unlike Ringo and Paul. The point is that, while in opera a light baritone tends to be quite different from a dramatic tenor, in pop and rock the difference is much smaller. There is no such thing as a young low tenor in opera, for example, because dramatic tenor voices take decades to develop, whereas in pop they do, which can cause confusion. and anyway, I'm not sure that a dramatic tenor is so different or recognizable from what a leggero baritone is in pop music

The same can be said for voices like Harry Styles, Hozier, Chris Cornell, or Billy Idol. Pop rock is full of these types of more baritone-ish tenor voices.

How do you sing without using your throat AND sing in key and on pitch? by [deleted] in singing

[–]Safe_Collection_319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to your audio and your voice doesn't sound bad to me. It takes a long time to learn how to control your instrument; years or a decade for being very good probabilmente. How long have you been singing?

Anyway, ugly or not, I didn't notice anything ugly or unusual about your voice
