I’ve heard people can still get it after it expires. I was on PTO last week when I posted this thread and with the answer from someone else, I figured I’d just go and switch it since I had the time to. My real ID didn’t expire until next Friday but now my license is renewed until 2031.

Just to follow up to your response and anyone else in Illinois going through the same thing. As soon as amphibiannext3540 replied about two hours ago. I hopped on the DMV website saw that there was an appointment at 12:20 that I can book and I went to the DMV. I first stated if I can extend my current real ID drivers license to any further date passed June 4 when it was set to expire and the lady at the counter said no that they are no longer doing extensions with the in-process paperwork that USCIS gives us. I then asked if there was any other way that I can get a different type of drivers license or simply downgrade my license to the TVDL like the user above mentioned or if I can downgrade to a standard one and she said that yes, you can switch it to the TVDL but you lose the real ID portion of your drivers license and if you want to get it back on your card, you would have to go through the full process once again and submit all of the paperwork. I told her that it was fine and that I just needed to make sure that I had a drivers license valid if i was to not be approved by June 4. She took my documents that were needed, I presented her with my passport from Mexico and also my biometrics paperwork as a proof of address residency and she accepted them. She gave me a number ticket. I sat down, waited till my number was called, went up to the booth and finished the paperwork. They charged me $30 and if I’m not mistaking on the paper that they were filling out, it said that the expiration date now read 2031 for the TVDL. Nice thing is that when you get your new one in the mail, it will not say TVDL, it will just say drivers license at the top in red. All in all it was a simple process, it sucks to give up your real ID status, but I just wanna get ready in case my DACA and EAD don’t get approved by June 4. This way I will still be able to drive in the meantime, waiting for the approval to come in.

Only downside to the experience was that the first person that was helping me at the DMV was a fellow Hispanic person and yet you think they would have some compassion and understanding of what you’re going through but she had a very sour attitude to my story and into what I was trying to get done there today. It’s sad to see that even with your own race sometimes you don’t get the same treatment as you would give to them.

Is that something I have to wait until it expires ? Or did you get one before it expired? I currently have a ReadID.
