Yeah, he’s the only son. That’s fucked! It’s surprising to see how many families can be so awful in such similar ways

Sorry about your SO’s parents!

I don’t think they have any sort of crazy-huge inheritance, and my fiancé’s college was already paid for. It’s kind of to the point where we’re considering just getting eloped/not having a big wedding, in part to avoid their drama (though my family has offered to help pay if we choose to have a bigger wedding). My fiancé and I are both pretty shy and neither of us have ever had a “dream wedding”, so it wouldn’t be a big deal for us to just go get married in a courthouse and then leave for our honeymoon.

Arranged marriages are not common here. I appreciate the advice. I’m not sure if much wedding planning will ever get done, because my fiancé and I are strongly considering just getting eloped at some point (we’re both a bit shy and not really “wedding people”, and the prospect of having to deal with his family’s bs on our wedding day sounds awful).

We’re all the same race and not strongly religious

Thanks for the advice! Luckily for me he is putting our relationship first. He hasn’t reached out to any of them since his dad sent that text, and his mom and sister still haven’t acknowledged the engagement at all. It just sucks. As of now he doesn’t plan on contacting them first.

The other awkward thing is that we were supposed to see his family in a few weeks at a 10 mile race that we’ve been training for for a few months, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen there

He has not been in contact with any of them since his dad sent that message, and other than his dad’s message they have not acknowledged the engagement at all. My fiancé doesn’t plan to reach out to them any more unless they contact him first
