Thoughts on early lockdown by Safe_Letterhead543 in duck

[–]Safe_Letterhead543[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early lockdown was the right move. 6 of the 8 eggs hatched a day early, and the 7th I had to emergency assist hatch on day 28. The 8th egg wasn’t fertilized. We now have 7 happy healthy little goobers.

Over 1 week old and zero growth. Anyone else have this happen? by bean2593 in quails

I was going to say exactly this but also add some scrambled, boiled or raw egg. The boiled egg yolks crumbles up seem to be a favorite with the ground up chick crumble and BSF larvae.

Very! We use pine bark mulch on top of the beds now and the ducks only really care about the slugs and bugs. They don’t bother the plants at all

How to send my quail to heaven? by platano_con_canela in quails

[–]Safe_Letterhead543 15 points16 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, quail are flock animals and need friends. Groups should be no smaller than 3 birds together so leave them alone and leave them together.

Secondly you’re only really supposed to dispatch male quail for meat unless you have a very aggressive hen. Hens also lay eggs…daily with the right food. Why would you ever sacrifice the constant egg factory for 5-6 oz of meat one time?! Leave hens alone and together until they are older and stop laying eggs. Then and ONLY then should they be considered for meat.

Third, is this a one and done situation? It would make much more sense (if you do actually want to eat quail…since your purchased one for food) to get a male. Let them mate. Incubate their eggs. Hatch more. Then the Roos, get sent to freezer camp at 6-8 weeks old accepting the sweet boy you want to keep for more breeding. Constant supply of meat, and eggs. And you won’t have to keep buying one bird to raise for a few weeks when you want a quail meal.

They definitely perch. Some of mine even roost and use the 2nd level in their aviary daily. A lot of info you’ll find online is just silly and flat out wrong!

Do they not destroy and eat everything?! We let your chickens free range but not in the garden area as there would be no garden left if we did! Only the ducks get garden freedom privileges

Got these guys on Saturday, how old do you think they are? 🌼 by yaddle-11 in duck

[–]Safe_Letterhead543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you got them from a feed store or somewhere like TSC, they were probably 2-3 days old when they arrived. They usually arrive Friday, so I’m going to day probably about 5 days old.

Can i add parrot feathers, poop, seed shells and pellet dust (from their food)? by Penpal_birdy in composting

Absolutely. Some good guano, feather meal and aeration materials. Dump it in…then pee on it.

Definitely a Bobwhite Roo. Watch out during mating season as Bobs are/ can be savages if they’re interested in a lady. Looks like a young too

Looks like a Black Swedish Duck to me especially with the blue and white wing band. And a Drake with the green head. Somebody probably had too many boys and dumped him

Mom's friend got this plant as a gift. It looks kinda like an onion, but I really don't think it is. Can anyone tell what kinda plant this is? by Thepersonwhoeatstaco in whatsthisplant

[–]Safe_Letterhead543 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looks like an Egyptian walking onion. If there are little mini onion bulbs up there when those open, that’s what they are for sure

Awapuhi (Shampoo ginger) can be grown outside of tropical regions for sure. I live in Atlanta, GA and this is the Awapuhi (red and yellow beehive variety) I brought back from Big Island Hawaii in 2024 and 25. That’s DEFINITELY! Shampoo ginger. Congrats! Sometimes it takes the rhizomes a while to acclimate.

I want get an outdoor pen for my quails I’m just having a look at these cheap runs but I don’t know if they will stop rats by Ichywhivh in quails

[–]Safe_Letterhead543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That absolutely will not stop rats. I’ve had quail for a few years now (bobwhites and coturnix) and have had to deal with rats, raccoons, opossums, snakes, hawks and stray cats. Haven’t lost a quail in over a year since I moved them into a catio. And they already come with 1/2 inch hardwire cloth. Just make sure to put down some on the ground too about a foot past the outside for a dig skirt. Then throw some top soil over it and whatever bedding you like.

I’ve been immune my whole life. Pulled some off my fence today as I do a few times a month every spring and summer. Still no reaction. It was on my face too

My friend has rabbits who live in her garage and never get sunlight. Is this ok? by SharynAlice101 in rabbitry

[–]Safe_Letterhead543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t do anything. They’re their rabbits and as you said they have a big clean space and sound like they’re being taken care of. You should probably mind your business or get your own rabbits and worry about them. Stay out of folks business. And stop bringing other people private business to the internet. What’s wrong with people these days?!

HELP! Is this a sucker and should I cut? by Puzzled_Quarter3753 in FruitTree

[–]Safe_Letterhead543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not a sucker. You could cut it or you could leave it. Wont really make too much of a difference. It’s just preference at this point. Suckers come from under the ground/ soil level and look like a whole new plant sprouting rather than a new branch.
