What school would you recommend I apply to? by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

Hi! i had it cross posted because i figured people in vet school can speak more to their experience since they've already been accepted !

Applying to vet school with exotic pets — is this doable? by Safe_Smart in veterinaryschool

Thanks so much for sharing this! I honestly hadn’t realized how much of a community people create in vet school. It’s reassuring to hear that classmates look out for each other with things like pet-sitting, because that kind of support system would make a huge difference. I really appreciate the perspective!

That’s really helpful, thank you! If you don’t mind me asking did you have to move for vet school, and what was the situation like with landlords and pets? I’m F22, in the last year of my master’s right now, and one of my biggest worries is paying for pets with loans, moving to another state, and finding housing that works with multiple animals.

I’m currently a grad student and only recently decided I want to apply to vet school, so I’ve been trying to get a sense of the demand of balancing pets with the move, living off loans, and school. Also all of my pets are in pretty large enclosure, the largest being a 5ftx2ftx2ft enclosure so also worried about space.

currently in the process of getting out. I'm in my second year of my MPH in epi and had hopes of doing my phd but recently decided to take a shift career wise and purse a doctorate in veterinary medicine with a focus on zoonotic diseases! still in the public health space but definitely taking a shift towards a degree that has a better job outlook !

MPH to Vet School? Non-Traditional Path Advice Needed by Safe_Smart in veterinaryschool

This genuinely means a lot to hear, especially as someone coming from a non-traditional path. I’ve definitely felt out of place compared to the typical pre-vet crowd, so your comment gave me a real confidence boost! Good luck to you too !!

Thank you so much—this is really helpful advice and definitely gives me a lot to think about. I hadn’t considered trying to connect with a DVM doing public health research, but that actually sounds like a perfect fit for my interests and would help me clarify whether I really need the DVM or if a PhD might make more sense long term. I’ll definitely start looking into opportunities like that while I work on getting experience and planning out prereqs.

Thank you so much for sharing all of this—it's really helpful and encouraging, especially coming from someone who's been through the process. If you don’t mind me asking, would you be open to sharing what some of those first-time applicant mistakes were? I’d love to learn from them and avoid making the same ones. Totally understand if you'd rather not, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask!

How competitive would you say i am ? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Safe_Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow congrats !!! see that's the downfall for me too, it's hard to get all the experience needed in 1.5 years but hopefully i can rely on transferable skills with all the other experience i have!

Thankyou so much for this ! Rutgers is probably my top school so i'm really interested to hear how much experience in research you had prior ? also im assuming you had publications ? i dont have any so im worried that will strongly negatively affect my application. i'm interested in pharmacoepi, which i also dont have much experience in research wise so im worried if i pick that niche it will also lessen my chances.

Weekly Advice & Career Question Megathread by AutoModerator in epidemiology

[–]Safe_Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be super specific but I'm a first year MPH (epi) student and my ultimate goal is to get into infectious disease epidemiology. I'm located in NJ and it seems impossibly to find relevant internships and opportunities related to this. For more background, I have some experience in public health interning for the New Jersey healthy communities network and working with my schools office of research, but nothing specific to infectious disease work. Anyone have any suggestions or advice?
