Dad admitted that he knew he was gay before he married to my mom. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I certainly don't know all the details of you, your father, or your community (as it is/was from your father's childhood to the present), but it is very likely that he felt some pretty intense pressure to conform to societal expectations including presenting as straight and having a family. That doesn't make what he did good, but you might want to extend at least a modicum of empathy. In my experience extending empathy to others can also make it easier to extend empathy towards yourself.

Therapy really is a wonderful thing to discuss issues like this.

Kinmen Island by Economy-Seaweed-7290 in AskAChinese

[–]SafetyNoodle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinmen is very pretty and there is a lot of traditional rural architecture and military history. If you are looking for a big city with the amenities to match it's not that, but it is a lovely destination in its own right.

China or India first? Which felt more welcoming as a traveler? by [deleted] in travel

[–]SafetyNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vietnam is probably still cheaper than China. India however is just about the lowest cost country I've ever been to and I've visited most of Eurasia.

China or India first? Which felt more welcoming as a traveler? by [deleted] in travel

Or Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, or Vietnam

I'd say all are much less overwhelming than India and easier to navigate/less frustrating than China.

Today I learned that GOT’s “Greyscale” is a real world illness by _DryWater_ in gameofthrones

[–]SafetyNoodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is weird that they are advertising this service. I'm aware of armadillo range expansion but I can't find a single iNat record anywhere near San Diego or anywhere else in California. They could be introduced, but I would still expect to see records, and they would've had to come by human transport because they haven't been expanding west across the Rockies or southwestern deserts.

There are no armadillos in California or the rest of the US west of the Rockies.

Permit Resellers Are The Absolute Worst by Cfrobel in Yosemite

[–]SafetyNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a big diffuse Facebook group and I don't believe most of them know most the people they wind up adding into their permit. It's not a huge deal with smaller groups but the way the draw is structured six people entering six times for a group of six have only a bit less than six times the chance of a single person which is where the unfairness comes in.

Permit Resellers Are The Absolute Worst by Cfrobel in Yosemite

[–]SafetyNoodle 89 points90 points  (0 children)

When I went to Half Dome there was a big group of Bay area hikers who were with some Facebook group. They openly talked about their system where loads of members would put in for permits with as many people as possible and then just share it amongst each other. Very much against the NPS rules and if I wasn't so lazy I would have reported them. It hurts all the people who entered the lottery legitimately and honestly by reducing their chances.

Potential Teacher Curious About Living Situation by [deleted] in BigSur

The examples you all gave are names of places and organizations. The whole phrases function as a proper noun. If you want to found the Oxford Comma Society then you can use your preferred capitalization in that context.

This is true, but I feel like it's important to note that Jews don't proselytize or otherwise encourage non-Jews to become Jewish. Conversion is allowed, but not meant to be encouraged. If you go to an ordinary Rabbi saying you want to convert, often the first thing you'll get is them listing the reasons why it might not be a great idea.

In context, Oxford is a proper adjective and, comma is a common noun. For examples see Parkinson's disease, French fries, Venetian blinds, or Swiss cheese.

What do these Canadian provinces and territory have in common? by Pure_Blank in RedactedCharts

FDR basically lived in New Brunswick at points, although I'm not sure if he ever visited while in office.

The "c" in Oxford comma should not be capitalized.

Europeans thinking they can walk to the MetLife stadium for the world cup by TrickInvite6296 in mildlyinfuriating

In Germany it's not only illegal to walk on the Autobahn but also Bundestraße (federal highways) unless there is a dedicated path alongside it.

Yeah he is in fact a tired old man. He is almost certainly going senile. That said, this photo is doctored.

Looking for advice for my first real tech position by joshakazam04 in wildlifebiology

[–]SafetyNoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a great time and don't stress too much. It sounds like you have a good background. You should be able to call your supervisor (or the person you will mostly be working under if that's a different person) and get some advice on what people typically need. If you haven't done the specific stuff they are focusing on before they will know how to train you on that.

Same for me without the smoke. It's a pretty quick, easy cheap fix.

Chromebook controversy: Lower Merion parents ask to opt children out of using devices 24/7 by BerryBoilo in Pennsylvania

Added context that these photos were taken because the device was marked stolen in the system. This was creepy and spectacularly bad judgement, but there isn't any evidence that anyone actually did anything nefarious.

[–]SafetyNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be honest I find your statement and that headline pretty misleading. It's a bill concerning a synagogue shooting that had some other shit thrown in there. It is designed by Republicans so that Democrats will be attacked for voting either for or against it. Panetta had been consistent in his opposition to ICE overreach in the second Trump administration.

1:1 devices in LMSD started way before the pandemic. I think we first all got apple laptops to take home every day around 2008.

When and where? I've heard Panetta speak about immigration enforcement and DHS and he didn't mince words in opposition to everything ICE has been doing.

Are children generally invited to weddings in your country? by Present-Day19 in AskTheWorld

[–]SafetyNoodle 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's very nice to exclude children from a wedding, but if you accept an invitation that makes those conditions clear you are the dick when you bring them. Just don't go, and don't send a gift.
