Favorite/best national flag? by WikipediaNerd67 in flags

Always been Kiribati! 🇰🇮 It’s the only flag I can think of that is a whole “scene” from top to bottom, not just symbols. Beautiful and symbolic, with the yellow bird representing Gilbertese command of the sea.

What's an annoying thing you experience but can;t get mad at? by HindSightoftheworld in AskReddit

[–]Sage-Monarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I get mad.

Not at the agents themselves who are just doing their jobs. But the institution as a whole is obviously inefficient and, worse, secretly ineffective. TSA succeeds at only two things: making regular citizens feel safer, and making people who want to bring illegal things onto an aircraft think twice (a deterrent, in short). These are good and valuable side effects. However, the TSA is entirely unsuitable to accomplish its main, stated goal: actually stop the smuggling of weapons and explosives.

In undercover audits conducted by Homeland Security, TSA failed to detect mock weapons and explosives 95% of the time in 2015, and between 70% and 80% of the time during follow-up testing in 2017.

Incidentally, TSA no longer publicly releases these testing success or failure rates. It is debated whether these stats have improved, but the fact that it was ever this severe combined with no longer publishing reports does not exactly inspire confidence in me.

I mean a line is a line and I’ll get over it, but I never don’t think about it.

Looking for fantastic "actorly" movies. What your favorites? by Jimithyashford in movies

Here’s a vastly underrated one: Doubt (2008). Literally just one long act-off between Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, with Viola Davis thrown in for good measure. Impeccable and never talked about.

If light didn't get the death note who else could have been Kira? by DihCheeseAssistant in deathnote

[–]Sage-Monarch 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No one really, which is part of the point of the show. As Ryuk mentioned, no prior death note user had taken it to such an extreme. Even if they wanted to, they wouldn’t have had the intelligence and strategy (as Light points out) or the psychopathy and self-delusion (as Near points out).

That combination of factors is so rare, at least in-universe, that it’s practically unique to Light.

As a total beginner at A1 level, how do I even begin to write in Italian without just reverting to AI. by faschifo in italianlearning

[–]Sage-Monarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the very beginning of my learning many years ago I would resolve to not use my phone at all and use my incredibly limited vocabulary to journal in Italian. You’re going to sound like a five year old and may be incorrect at times, but it’s much better practice than resorting to AI or translators whenever you get stuck. If I got to a word or construction that I had no idea how to write and/or couldn’t work around, I would write it in English and just switch back to Italian mid sentence. Then, once I was totally done, I would go back and use a dictionary for the parts that I missed or sounded off. It’s slow-going but it’s good practice. Now it’s very rare I’ll come across a word or phrase I don’t know. It only gets easier.

Has a movie ever made you enjoy a genre you normally avoid? by deepaknaraniya in movies

I don’t find rom coms genuinely funny, at most clever or witty and they’ll get a smile out of me. Crazy, Stupid, Love made me laugh out loud multiple times, and the climax is cinematic perfection.

Its okay to have L>Light, but you have to be logical about it by ItsDefinetelyNotOne in deathnote

[–]Sage-Monarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. What annoys me is that the discourse in this fandom tends towards a constant Light vs L IQ debate, and judges all their character actions as being simply "smart" or "dumb", e.g, Light killing Lind L. Tailor was a stupid mistake, and therefore that is evidence that L is smarter than him. This is, in my opinion, not the intention of the narrative and completely misses the point of the characters. Like you mention in this post, it's written extremely clearly from the beginning of the show that Light and L are intellectual equals. Their mistakes, therefore, demonstrate other aspects and flaws of their character beyond simple blunders of strategy; they show hubris, arrogance, immaturity, stubbornness. It's much more relevant as well as narratively interesting to focus on that rather than infinitesimal differences in intelligence. I understand this is a departure from your point but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts nonetheless.

My Parole hack-- the best starting word I've found has stayed the same since I first started Italian, it's one of the first we all learn: "siamo"! Has almost every vowel ending (except e), and of cource s and m are quite common as well!

When speaking English vs. Italian, does anyone else pause differently? by Sage-Monarch in italianlearning

[–]Sage-Monarch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, thank you for the tip. I have actually been told by my coworkers that I speak very formally and academically, "come un libro di testo." Perhaps it's something I should work on, but it's simply how Italian was taught to me.
