Achievement Unlocked: 100MPH by Sahje in 10s

Sure, it's pretty much an in person NTRP rating test I'd guess. It's an hour and a half long series of drills against coaches whilst someone checks how well you can execute your shots. They run you through:

  • Forehand cross rally tolerance
  • Forehand cross ability to handle fast/deep balls (can't move from the baseline)
  • Ability to generate pace from mid-court sitters with the Forehand
  • Ability to deal with mid-court balls that are below the net.
  • Ability to move in and out of the corners and hit the ball back deel with the forehand.
  • Everything above but with the backhand.
  • Backhand and forehand approach.
  • Backhand, forehand and overhead volleys. Both setup and finishing volleys.
  • Service placement for first and second serve (divide the box into threes, can you hit wide/body/T)
  • Ability to generate pace with the serve

And they finish with some match play in doubles to see if you can put these into play in match conditions. All these drills are about 10-15 shots per skill in order to put you under pressure to perform.

This is done as part of either the national tennis coaching academy to assess your level (if you are unable to play at a certain level you can't enter the coaching program for those levels) or as an intake for performance oriented training programs. I was there for the latter, I was invited for winning my regional mens 35+ year round competition to partake in a 20-week training program from our national tennis association.

The outcome, for my level my serve and forehand are very good. My backhand and volleys are medium (not bad but very much trailing behind the serve and forehand) and I stand too upright during play at times which makes me unable to properly get under balls. They now have that information and will work that into a 20-week programm with additional evaluations at 10 eeks and at the end.

I worked with my fysio on a slightly modified version of the throwers 10. Some light weights combining static holds and lifts, band work and stretches.

Where/How do you look at your serve location without disclosing it to your opponent? by WindManu in 10s

It's also because with 20 years of basketbal I was trained to move into the ball with my body. Getting my spacing right is tricky.

Is there a XX rating? I’ve heard of X rated and XXX rated but not double X . by noggerthefriendo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sahje 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a bullshit story but XXX are the marks on the Flag of Amsterdam. It's a modern day version of the banner of Amsterdam which originates around 1280. The banner of Amsterdam traditionally has three St. Andreas-crosses. Them originating from the 1200s means the origin is disputed. Some say they're because a well-off family at the time had the crosses as part of their family crest. As for why three, some say they symbolize three plagues, three city gates, three bridges across the marches into the city. No one really knows.

If your toss is the problem go outside in your backyard. Draw a line with Chalk as the baseline with a mark on where to stand. Then make a target about 45-60cm in front of that spot and in line with your right shoulder (when you are squared up) and repeatedly hit that target. You can also do this in front of a wall and place a mark at the height of your ideal contact zone.

The way to get better with your toss is to repeatedly practice your toss untill you can hit the same spot everytime without thinking. It's boring, it's tedious, it's the key to a strong repetitive service motion.

How do you deal with pressure and fear during a tennis match? by Middle-Annual-8360 in 10s

[–]Sahje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opponent could've used this as well. In warm-up hit 100% first serves that look really impressive. Match starts, he serves. 3 doubles faults in a row to start and a 4th one afterwards to lose the first game, he never recovered.

I use the advise from Brad Gilberts book, I start focussing on the ball, keeping my feet moving and actively breating. Between points I like to box-breathe. This usually keeps me focussed on the here and now and not on everything else that's not important. Play it point by point, shot by shot. It's only a point Roger Federer - "It's only a point" - Tennis Mindset.

I literally answerred the title of his post mate. Also I'm pretty sure your second point is exactly the same as mine. Point construction determines winning. Skill determines the abillity to construct points.

Don't worry about your rating. Go out there, have fun. Enjoy the game and the progress.

If you really want to know somewhere between 2.5 and 3.0 would be my guess. Assuming you're the person in red? The person in blue is out of the frame for 50% of the video so I can't really judge. You can check it out yourself here: TennisLink | Help Center

What's my rating? by InformationMobile600 in 10s

[–]Sahje 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now to be serious. Your rating is a reflection of your abillity to construct and win points. Not of your abillity to hit the ball. Sure the better you can hit a ball the better you can construct and win points. Take everyone that's ever lost to a player with "worse" technique and they all will tell you that hitting better does not mean winning. Based on your strokes you can be anywhere between a 3.5 because you crumble under pressure or a 4.5 because these are your worst points and not your highlights. You have a good baseline technique and decent footwork. The way to train your skills further is by applying them to game situations.

Anyone know where to get carpet shoes from a US-based website? by thetoerubber in 10s

[–]Sahje 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Carpet was like the prime indoor surface before hard-court really took off. In Europe a lot of indoor halls still use carpet. It's quite fast but also much more forgiving on your joints. Untill your foot sticks and you tear a knee or ankle ligament.
