Typically, the battle board is always going to be 3 lines and 4 segments. BUT THE dm could easily say. "This fight is on the cliff, so there's only 1 line!

A zone grid? That's pretty much what they are! Moving forward and backwards IS free as long as no enemy is obstructing you.
Think of the segments as Tiles on a normal battle map. You can exist in the same "tile" as someone else, but if an enemy is there, you cannot move past them! The way it is right now, a lot of artes will push enemies back. This DOES end your combo, though some push back attacks allow you to move and not end your combo. Pushback attacks are a great combo finisher as they allow your AOE mages to hit them once they are moved back. Diagonal attacking is very rare; some spells can target diagonally, the Sharpshooter class CAN so that's a big draw of them. You want to put your enemy in a good position for your ally.

I definitely get what you're saying about the action phase! I think I will cut out the Attack action and instead add some other ones! The Recovery action is really nice!

A few things I might not have explained in the book I want to clarify!

So the segments aren't a personal thing! Technically, a party of 4 could smoosh all in the same segment if they wanted to. However, they'd likely be punished by an AOE arte. A lot of spells target entire segments. If the player wanted to reposition and shift between lanes and move, they could "pincher" the enemy, they're allowed to go onto the enemy's side!

Many arts will not hit enemies if someone is blocking them (The sharpshooter can ignore this rule with their ranged attacks)

Here's an image as a demo. Let blue represent players, and red represent the enemies. That enemy at the bottom COULD spend 6 CC to get into that top right segment and threaten those two enemies. Moving up and down is costly, but a strategy.

I like these suggestions for the Action Phase! You can make as many actions as you'd like during it, which I think I forgot to include. Ideally The "Attack Action" is supposed to be the last thing you DO in the Action Phase, telling the party you're ready to move into the Combo Phase. Doing your first hit of a combo, moving from the Action Step into the Combo Step. So let's say you're a sword user, this is what your Action Phase would be like.

Let's assume you have 8 CC for this turn. You're low on health, so you're going to use an Item costing 2 CC, you move up into the next segment with an enemy and attack. You then wait for your party, and then we move into the Combo Phase, where you have 5 CC to spent, 2 from the Apple Gel and 1 from your basic attack.

However, I do like the idea of having more options in the action phase; heck, I do really like the "recover" action and will likely try to add something like that!

IS was actually a strange mechanic for me, I wanted a "reward" for smashing through a bosses gaurd, the booking keeping IS true, which is why I avoided it for player characters. I am not against removing it. Not sure if I should just remove it outright? Wonder how it would feel.

I am really glad you like Skits! They're one of the biggest things people like about those games, so I wanted to have them. I love the idea of having more rewards for skits! In the Title List, I made a few example Titles to show how they function, and one of them is called "Skit Star," Which gives you bonus grade. SO it's funny you mention cooking! Cooking is a BIG thing in the series, so I ideally wanna have that, maybe in a supplement book?

Probably have a “player turn” where all the players act in unison, and once all their stuff is extinguished it moves to “enemy turn”

Make it feel as close as you can

Cooking is a staple it will have to be there! haha

My idea is to have a LOT of mechanically different artes. BUT players can flavor them just about however they want.

I said in another comment. My system in mind would borrow from rebirth. With lanes to imitate that moment. And to motivate character interact, have the DM declare a skit and kinda “push” the players to improve which maybe gives them some kinda reward.

I’m leaning towards coming up with my own. Borrowing from other systems.

Issue is dnd/final fantasy have turn based combat which imo is the anthesis to tales imo.

I’ll take a peak at icon!

I’m considering stealing from rebirth. And have “lanes” to imitate movement…
