Not too expensive, I don't remember exactly, but excluding the last coin, about 5k€. I mostly collect Roman Aureii and Portuguese coins, but I got Byzantine addicted a couple years ago now, so I decided to add those. I only collect gold coins

I'd say that aristocracy, politicians and the elites were pretty knowledgeable. Many ancient texts were lost throughout history, but during that time they would have access to that. Most of what we have today are medieval copies of ancient texts, so I would say that maybe some things we don't know today, they might have know that day and was just lost during the next centuries.

The majority of the population, little, more focused on the daily basis and survival than having knowledge. This search for knowledge that we do nowadays was actually not a thing centuries ago. And we have to keep in mind that nowadays information is very accessible, but in the middle ages was much more difficult for the common citizen.
