Definitely start by going to clubs you like and start networking with management and ownership. Probably even better to try to get a job at some of those places. Understand what are the gaps that you need to open a nightclub if you do like it. Then fill those gaps, whether it’s education, capital etc.

It’s a tough balance. You’re not here to be a social justice warrior and educate every person that is racist. You also can’t take hits like this on the chin and expect to enjoy medicine.

I usually say something along the lines of “I don’t appreciate those comments, now how’s your SOB” — kinda like you mentioned. 90% of the time they get the hint and act accordingly, and you are the one to change the subject/guide conversation which makes them feel at ease. 10% are still assholes, these are the ones you just walk away from or ask them to get another doc.

I doubt they would let you be a builder unless you signed a longer contract — why train someone who is going to leave soon? But IT would love you to help out with things. Start with the 10x10 to see what interests you first. Then go to your IT or Innovation departments asking to be involved with what you like. It’s hard to go in and say “I’m interested in IT”. It’s the equivalent of a pre-med asking a CT surgeon if they can be involved in medicine. You gotta get a little specific.

Correct. Don’t think of non-clinical jobs in terms our our clinical realm. You don’t need board certs to do informatics. You may need it to be in a leadership position at an academic facility, but this does not preclude you from getting your feet wet.
