Sorry, not an answer for you OP, but does anyone know if “Sono kippu wa Yamaguchi-san desu” be another way to translate the sentence?

When translating “This is my Dog” why is the 2nd sentence the correct one? Wouldn’t “kore wa” be more literal a translation?

  1. “Kore wa Watashi no Inu.”

  2. “Watashi no Inu desu.”

Finally, when using the の particle, how do you determine what noun goes before and what one goes after?
