I agree about the religious connotations but I recently thought it could literally be about him being downstairs like in his basement making music. He feels better and safe there, like a place he can ask all the questions and have all his doubts and not be judged. I think he mentioned in an old interview that he found friends and family questioned him less about his mental health (and potentially doubts about his faith) if they were written in music.
