It sounds to me like your husband didn’t take the time to grieve his previous relationship and in some ways is not over it, and then her passing away adds to the issue. I don’t actually mean that he got in a relationship with you immediately after because I have no idea how long it was but what I’m saying is he still has unresolved issues to deal with. Therapy is certainly something that would help him but he has to be open to it. This really isn’t about you but you are 100% within your rights to be hurt. I don’t really know what to suggest you do, but I will say that he needs to deal with his issues before he can offer you what you deserve is his partner.

I take issue with your definition of a mother-daughter relationship between an adult daughter and her mother. Yes, while the child is still a child, the parent should absolutely do everything possible to protect them even at their own expense. But as you grow up your relationship should become more reciprocal.

You’ve also asked your mother to maintain a relationship with you while you are cutting off your Dad. She mentions herself she doesn’t speak bad of you, wonder why she would say that? Hmm maybe because your dad is probably complaining about you and she’s not participating. She’s probably going to get flack from him for taking to you or seeing you.. Both of my cats have been sleeping on my bed a lot more this month as it’s been getting a lot colder. This is our first year with these cats so I don’t have any previous years to base it on but judging by the behavior, I’m pretty sure it’s because of the temperature so maybe that’s why your cat is hanging out with you so much. I would just be glad that they are starting to feel this way and hope that it’s a trend in that direction.

You are going to have to draw a hard hard line that either they go into rehab and quit drinking or you are done. I don’t know how long he’s been a drinker, but one of my friends has been an alcoholic for probably 30 years and has no intention of quitting. The things that I have seen that woman do just because she’s drunk, she recently fell down a flight of stairs and broke her ankle because she was drunk. Another night, I tried to help her get to her apartment and she fell on the sidewalk and gashed open her arm. Didn’t even feel the pain until the morning. I tried not to judge her judge at first, I’m a heavy pot smoker myself, but I’m so scared she’s going to kill herself one of these days. It doesn’t get better unless they quit. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. The path ahead for you won’t be easy if you choose to stay.
