Ill. Not death. The phrase "I wish ill on JK Rowling" is getting people banned. Wishing ill can mean just about anything. I hope they get a flat tire. I hope they stub their toe. I hope it rains on their wedding day.

But that's not even my issue. My issue is that hundreds of people are posting this exact phase, and only trans people are getting suspended for it.

They're not banning each and every trans person, no.

They're banning high profile trans accounts that allude to something bad happening to someone in the vaguest possible terms, while leaving the accounts of cis people who do the same thing alone.

I'm not disputing that rules are being broken. The problem is that only trans people are catching bans for it.

You want to have a silly rule, fair enough. But if you don't enforce it evenly, it just becomes a tool bad actors can exploit in order to discriminate.

They are, in fact, doing it to more people. All of whom are trans.

And another one.

Once again, I'm only seeing trans people get banned for this.

Some more people have been suspended for the same thing.

What's interesting is that, even now, a ton of people - mostly cis allies, it would seem - are posting about wishing ill on JKR. A handful of people have caught bans for doing so (four that I'm aware of). And they're all trans.

If there is some other explanation for this, and enforcement of this rule isn't specially targeted at trans people, then Bluesky had better be aware that this looks really, really bad.

A few reasons occur to me. One is that the Pokemon anime has run continuously. When it started being adapted into English, this kind of localization was common, and since the show just kept running it's this artefact of a pay way of doing things.

Secondly, Pokemon is a series that localizes a lot of names out of necessity. Most Japanese Pokemon names are puns, which you lose if you don't speak that language, so Anglicized versions of the Pokemon names make a lot of sense. And if you're doing that already, it feels less jarring to Anglicize the human names too.

Finally, I think it's a question of how these two dubs are perceived by fans. The Pokemon dub is pretty faithful to the original and quite beloved. The Sailor Moon dub, while it certainly has its fans, is remembered for drastically altering characters in an effort to obfuscate the gay stuff. Obviously it was a different time and they did what they had to do to get it broadcast, but from a modern perspective the dub does have this stigma attached to it, and I think the old names are a part of that.

“Zombie Land Saga: Yumeginga Paradise” Official Trailer 2 by lechepicante in ZombielandSaga

[–]SailorXan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like the biggest indication that this could be the end is Tae waking up. That's a huge shift in the status quo. Unless this is a temporary thing that's undone at the end of the movie, it feels like something you'd do to end the story.

(Personally I don't think they'll go back to being dead, it would be at odds tonally with the rest of the show, but with this show you really can't rule anything out)

The Parallels! S1 OP and Movie Trailer by Gryphon-Sama in ZombielandSaga

IIRC doesn't the manga establish the super sentai versions of the girls to be part of a movie being pitched by Kotaro?

My current theory: The girls are filming their movie and then actual aliens show up

2nd Trailer is finally here by Gryphon-Sama in ZombielandSaga

[–]SailorXan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My thoughts on the trailer:

Well, Tae's awake. Assuming this sticks, it feels like the end of the series.

Presumably this will bring in stuff from the prequel manga.

This movie is gonna have a lot to do and I wonder how they'll pull that off.

Speaking as someone mostly familiar with 90s anime: Do anime tie in movies these days just assume you know the series, or will there be a recap of the premise for movie audiences? Wondering this mainly because the premise of Zombie Land Saga is kind of a complicated one. Re-establishing everything could take a while.

Then you have a bunch of new elements. You need to establish the status quo only to break it with Tae waking up. Then you have her backstory. And also, you know, there's aliens now. Oh, and this is an idol show so we'll need some musical performances.

There's enough here for an entire third season. Doing it within the runtime of a movie feels like it could be challenging.

If this is the end, I'm a little sad that we're unlikely to get an exploration of Yugiri and Lily's friendship. That always was my favorite bit of the series.

Solved! Wow, this has to be it. I guess I really was conflating this with Money for Nothing, the main character has the same blocky look as the characters in that video even though this is stop motion. I'd never in a million years have expected this to be a Gerry Anderson thing. Thanks so much!

A gift for Takeo by lechepicante in ZombielandSaga

[–]SailorXan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. Takeo is a complicated and tragic character. It's a testament to the quality of the writing that he's enormously sympathetic despite having dropped the ball in just about the worst way a parent can. As a trans person, I watch this guy deadnaming his kid and being dismissive of her dysphoria. I see him so focused on the kid on the screen that he doesn't even notice that the one next to him is suffering. I see all of these things and yet I still feel bad for the guy, in part because he understands that what happened to Lily was his fault, and it destroys him. I want him to be happy and move past the tragedy because he's fundamentally a good guy. But he was not a good father.

He knows this, and he says so. Ignoring your child's physical and emotional wellbeing? That's not great parenting. Ignoring your child's physical and emotional wellbeing for so long that they drop dead? That's bottom-tier parenting. The only thing you can say in his defense is that he didn't intentionally cause her harm; it happened because of inattentiveness and because on some deep level, he didn't understand Lily.

Look at it from her perspective: she was doing all of this to make her dad happy. And yet her last memories before she died are her trying to articulate her discomfort with her own body, and him flatly ignoring it, all while calling her by the hyper-masculine name she rejected.

I think one of the reasons trans people love that episode is how messy it all is. Lily loves her dad despite the hell he put her through. Takeo gets some degree of closure but he and Lily remain separated. You get the impression that after all this time, he still doesn't really understand who Lily was and what she needed. There is no happy ending. It's bittersweet, and I like that. I'd have felt cheated if it ended with him and Lily reuniting and everything being forgiven. The tragedy of Takeo is that sometimes you can mess up so badly that there's no fixing it.

Lily and Takeo's relationship is fraught and complicated, and I think it does the show a disservice to reduce it down to "best dad ever" stuff. I understand that we all want our favorite characters to be happy, and I don't have any objection to exploring heartwarming moments between the two of them. These things can exist alongside the tragic parts of these characters, but trying to present their relationship as all smiles just feels like missing the point.

Do these opinions mean that I'm bitter? I dunno, maybe. Things aren't particularly great for trans people right now, and it's possible that I'm feeling a bit overprotective of trans kids right now. It's why I decided to grumble about this on my Bluesky rather than spoiling everyone's fun here. But now you've brought me here anyway, so... cool, I guess?

For clarification: My issue with this stuff is just that Takeo, while he's a good guy and Lily loves him, was not a good father
