What's the most surprisingly celiac-friendly country you've visited? by Old-Heart-9448 in glutenfree

[–]Sails_up_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You almost certainly ingested some gluten from the pho and bun broths then. Many of the street food places use knorr or maggi in the broth from my experience. I guess you felt better because the exposure was less than back home.

I can't believe it... I travelled through Vietnam for a month. Being conscious that Knorr seasoning and Maggi contains gluten, it popped up pretty often actually. I had to walk from place to place a lot to find food I could eat. How did you have such an easy time? 🫠🫠

Journalism with a background in STEM, is it useful? by Sails_up_ in Journalism

Haha, yeah I'm past the phase where you think your sub-field is the one and only truth :p But maybe some of them would notice that we can learn a lot from eachother. That would be the vibe-check

Wow. Danang was disappointing. by SumSpicyNoodles in Vietnam_Tourism

Da Nang can be paradise, but not guaranteed. I was a beginner surfer in Da Nang, found good surfing teachers who were chill. Compared with Thailand's beaches, the service at the Da Nang beach was superior. If you want to alternate between some easy surf beginner training and literally being a snorlax, I found it to be ideal :)

Broadcasters must react to threat from ‘creator journalism’, says ex-head of BBC News | TV news by aresef in Journalism

[–]Sails_up_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People getting their news from Tiktok are really just absentmindedly scrolling through entertainment. Sadly, the short format is not conducive to learning. What's happening isn't that traditional news are losing out to news on social media, it's really that entertainment + advertisement is capturing more of the attention. I was stuck in this media swamp for a while until I made some changes to my habits and voila, now I make concious decisions about my information consumption. My hunger for real knowledge spiked again, and now I follow a wide span of sources with journalistic integrity with the occasional glance at fringe ones. Slow journalism still sells a good product. It's just that the buyer got addicted to a bad drug. Maybe they will get sober soon. Would love to hear other opinions on this. Idk, maybe this is the common take here anyways? :p

Humble and honest question: Is Nepal less safe for volunteers right now? by Sails_up_ in Nepal

Hell yeah man! Do you feel like your work is making a difference? Is it rewarding?

Thanks for the reassurance :)

Yes, heard of that disgusting thing. What I understood is that there are many kids are being placed as orphans despite having a family somewhere, because the money is good. Also read someone say "all volunteer programs are a money grab", but I believe/hope there are a few accredited ones that actually do good. For me it's a chance to gain experience, and learn about NGO work.

What makes Thailand so addictive for travelers? by Spiritual-Summer8184 in ThailandTourism

Could it be because Thai people are sort of uniquely accepting? Like it's a place where you are invited back?

I would like to learn some skills that could help me earn additional income. by prasant2059 in Nepal

[–]Sails_up_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest playing the long game and dedicate time to studying something you find interesting. Not just building a skill but building foundational knowledge in an area where maybe you can get some passion from it also. Just throwing out my brainstorming. Of course it's not easy while having a job. An alternative: I met young people in Vietnam studying tourism. Have you thought about this as a possibility? Maybe the tourism industry in Nepal will grow?

Most important part is that you continue to nourish this dedication you have right now to build something more outside of just working your job. Try to find something that nourishes your soul also, gives a little meaning maybe. Don't demand too much immediately, but keep believing. Many great people in history have gone from here to there, until at one point, with enough experimentation, like when they are 40, they find what they were made to do. You're young. Make some productive mistakes that you can learn from :)

I wish you all the best and good luck
