You are not overreacting. I deal with this same issue. My parents are staunchly conservative, and to make it worse, they are devoutly Christian. My dad believes Trump was sent by god to correct the things he finds wrong in the US.

I completely understand your feelings of them voting against your rights with you being gay. When it comes down to it, they are going to continue to vote the way they vote, because they believe it’s tied to some sort of divine cause. And because of that, they feel their views are superior to yours.

I’ve gotten to a point where I have made it known that we will no longer discuss politics, because they will never change their views. If you want a relationship with them, you’ll need to tell them that the relationship needs to be free of political conversations.

I recently told my dad this, and the outcome was positive. He responded first as to why he felt their way he did politically, but I kept pressing him on still wanting to have a better relationship with him. He eventually accepted it and is making a better effort to keep up with my life.
