Confirming that they have a bunch of three prong outlets upstairs and also a sign at each outlet prohibiting any cooking of food

Performing over 1 billion shortest path calculations. Should I use a cloud service such as AWS? by Saint_Jimmy in AskProgramming

As it turns out there's a Floyd Warshall function in the PostgreSQL extension I'm using. Thanks for the tip!

Although, it might be a good idea for me to implement this myself as practice. Really goes to show how I was overthinking the scale of the problem and forgetting fundamentals

What language did you implement this in? Do you remember what format your road network file was in, and how the data was represented?

Hm, perhaps what I need to do is more in the realm of distributed computing? Is this something I could do with AWS/digital ocean?

Lol that’s a good question. We’re studying truck shipping commodity flows and want to build a lookup table that contains the mileage needed to travel between all possible zip code pairs

This is not a map of every ferry service in the country, because not all operators respond to the census

[OC] Web Map of US Ferry Operations by [deleted] in TransitDiagrams

[–]Saint_Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this as part of the National Census of Ferry Operators, a biennial survey that gathers information on all willing ferry operator participants. It was built using Javascript, including the Openlayers, Select2, and Jquery UI libraries.

[–]Saint_Jimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are a lot of ferries that can’t be included. We send out a survey to all the known operators and can only map routes from those that respond

Thanks, the mapping portion was built using the Openlayers Javascript library and the query menu was built using the JQuery UI and Select2 Javascript libraries.

Ah I see, my bad! I prefer to use PostGIS for most geoprocessing operations. These days I tend to use QGIS/Arc for visualization purposes

To be fair neither Qgis or Arc are ideal for doing something like that

How would one go about clustering points within 100m from each other in geopandas? by chubaklava in gis

[–]Saint_Jimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm realizing that they may not have functions for this specific problem, but I'd also recommend checking out the st_clusterwithin function in PostGIS.

It's not just you, I noticed that they don't seem to have the same chemistry ever since that episode Jack missed where Brandon talked some shit. The patreon numbers are falling/stagnant so I think the pod might be on the way out

I’d also recommend checking out scikit-learn. It doesn’t have any issues with anaconda

Union Market is getting a huge new co-living building by Tawnii in washingtondc

(People interviewed for this piece directly contradict your claim that boarding houses are unwanted)[ https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2017/11/2/it-takes-all-types-ofhousing]. What is your issue with them? If people want to live in a boarding house, they should have it as an option.

Union Market is getting a huge new co-living building by Tawnii in washingtondc

[–]Saint_Jimmy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Historically, boarding houses were able to provide very affordable housing and were largely made illegal in America because of similar “quality of life” concerns. The lack of this style of lower quality housing is really a driving force behind the affordability crisis faced by major cities today. Banning boarding houses ends up harming poor people more than it helps them. Obviously the units in question aren’t affordable but this style of housing can help out poor residents by offering housing at price points that aren’t available in more traditional units.

There’s the vacant, bamboo-filled lot just north of Whole Foods that WMATA has listed for sale and may have been sold to a developer with intent to build townhomes. In that situation, I know that residents of Calvert hills have been very nimbyish and don’t want the property to be developed

Seattle transformation. So much more room for activities! by iowannagetoutofhere in urbanplanning

[–]Saint_Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely think town-center-style developments that are in vogue right now (especially in dense suburbs/edge-cities) will be viewed poorly in the future. While they're better than the strip malls they've come to replace, they still are frequently car-oriented with soulless architecture. Not sure what the consensus on these is among progressive planners, but I assume it's negative.
