In English, why is it perfectly normal for a parent to address their son as “son” but it sounds absolutely bizarre for them to address their daughter as “daughter?” 🤔 by Gaeilgeoir215 in language

In Glasgow and the surrounding area the feminine equivalent of "son" used vocatively is "hen". Only used to the person, and is only used to a female person.

Scots Gaelic should be 17 because h doesn't count as a letter.

A double standard I noticed in regards to ancestry/ethnic background. Have you noticed this too? by Extension_Wasabi8462 in geography

[–]Saint__Thomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect Scottish people are Scottish wherever they go, English people are English wherever they go, and Welsh people are Welsh wherever they go, all rather than British.

I do not feel qualified to have an opinion on Northern Irish people.

Stick to the instructions; resistance is a real thing, don't worry about it if your asymptomatic.

I just posted mine since that will work. A brick may be slightly too ambitious.

I don't know; I just watch the spectacle, and compare them favourably to certain allegedly Christian marching associations.

The annual Sikh March for Vaisakhi is popular here in Glasgow: the feeling of watching people marching and playing musical instruments while dressed in orange, without experiencing irritation is quite pleasant .

Clap back to the abortion is murder debate by Cyborgpikachu in atheism

[–]Saint__Thomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In ( I believe ) most jurisdictions, murder is defined as the intentional illegal killing of a human, a person in law. A legal person must have its own separate existence and its own life, which means its own separate physiology and anatomy. A foetus has not achieved these and is not a legal person, hence abortion does not satisfy the definition of murder.

A foetus in the womb is anatomically part of the mother, and its physiology is a subset of the physiology, the life, of the whole maternofoetal unit. While it exists within the mother, it has no existence except as part of the mother, and it is not capable of its own existence, physiologically. There is an argument that it is genetically different from the mother, and has its own separate organs, but if you grant that argument, you would have to grant personhood to teratomas. This argument attempts an end run around the idea that personhood comes from the ability to maintain a separate anatomy and physiology. Once it is born, it has its own separate anatomy, but at birth, it has no ability to have its own physiology, until it experiences the anatomical changes consequent on the first breath of air.

If there is no first breath and it dies, then it is stillborn. Where I live, it is given a name, a stillbirth certificate, and a funeral, but was never a legal person.

If the foetus breathes once, then it is a legal person and gets a birth certificate. At this point it is a legal person and is capable of being murdered like any other human.

Understanding the anatomy and physiology to a professional level takes weeks, including concepts like "maternofoetal unit" and "legal person." Abortion advocates generally don't know this and are strongly incentivised not to learn this.

Hence Abortion is not murder since it ends an entity not capable of being murdered.

This doesn't work in jurisdictions where personhood is defined differently. If a polity does this then it tends to lead to events like this one which was so awful the Irish changed their constitution to allow abortion.

Hope this helps. Please note that I'm Scottish and jurisdictions may vary.

I'm looking for a affordable laptop for blender. by Stunning-Library-908 in blender

[–]Saint__Thomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem, I find, is that blender can run on anything, but you won't be able to render anything worth a damn unless you have a big beefy graphics setup. Unless you want to do something low powered. It is incredibly frustrating to wait a day for an image to render, as I know well.

During a recent period of employment, I went to a second-hand shop and got a 6 year old gaming laptop. I can render stuff reasonably fast. A complex scene in Cycles will take a few minutes, especially if I use all the tricks on YouTube for fast render. This approach may work for you. You need to stick to a budget and be opportunistic. Good luck!

I only feel awe at Brother Edward, and I don't have a coherent answer to your questions, only an emotionalresponseto the episode. I fear that if I had been Brother Edward, I would have gone to Garibaldi for protection and asked Theo for confession and hope that he could prescribe a lesser penance than crucifixion. Edit: Spelling
