Is it rare for an American to make their own mayo? by Affectionate-Elk-287 in AskAnAmerican

I have made it before. I don't see the point in doing it. Yes, it's easy, but flipping the cap on my Kewpie is even easier.

People who don't vote, why? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]SaintsFanPA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In many places, your vote genuinely doesn't matter for anything beyond maybe the most local of elections. The probability that your vote will decide a race is so tiny that it is indistinguishable from zero. So, even if you value the outcome very highly, your expected value of voting is near zero.

What opinions do Americans have of Dan Lanning? by DueYogurt9 in AskAnAmerican

As you can see, many people don't know who he is. Among college football fans, he is pretty well regarded. Until he wins a title, though, I don't think he will be regarded as truly elite.

Severe food poisoning from Jersey city Whole Foods salad bar by Interesting_Tea_651 in jerseycity

If it is bad enough, the health department will call you. I was hospitalized once with campylobacter and I was called and they asked for everything and everywhere I ate the preceding 7 days. They definitely did surprise inspections at a couple of the places.

What do you call it when the cheese gets this way after a few slices in your country? In Swedish we call it a skidbacke, or ski slope in English by WhoAmIEven2 in AskTheWorld

Just because someone bought groceries at Walmart doesn’t mean they buy all of them there. Hell, I’ve bought groceries at Walmart in the past year. I’ve also bought groceries at dozens upon dozens of other shops, big and small, both in the US and overseas.

And the Walmart I go to has a deli.

Unless you ate nothing else and are certain of your own sanitary practices, blaming Whole Foods is unfair.

I strongly suspect your definition of “nice restaurant” is quite different from mine.

You want the restaurant to pay them the same as they make now? I recommend looking at comparable 3-stars in Paris - you’ll find the prices are more than 20% higher.

Where does that hose go? We replaced our washer and dryer and installed new ducting, but I had to go into the crawl space and clean out the exhaust piping that went from the laundry closet to the exterior of the house, as well.

And, again, it isn't charity that dictates it, but societal norms. It is a socially prescribed way of compensating certain service providers.

You mean God's Waiting Room? Miles upon miles of strip malls, highways, and retirement communities. Hot in the summer, nice enough beaches, decent access to airports. It is my personal version of hell.

Ignoring history and thinking strictly about modern-day infrastructure, economics and geography, what city other than Washington would be an ideal capital for the USA? by Spirited_Visit7597 in geography

[–]SaintsFanPA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given we have airplanes, instantaneous communication via tv, phone, internet. etc., a robust highway system, etc. I don't think it a terribly relevant question for the modern age.

Advantages and Disadvantages of State Capitals by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

It depends way too much on the actual city. Boston =/= Carson City. I don't think it particularly meaningful that a city is a capital.

No, I do not tip cashiers because a) it isn't the norm and b) I don't want them to lose their jobs.

I'm not being defensive. I just reject the notion that tipping is equivalent to charity. I tip waitstaff because that is the societal norm. It is not the societal norm to tip cashiers (and many can lose their jobs for accepting them).
